Public Health update from Benton Franklin Health District:Recent testing found elevated levels of PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") in Kennewick’s drinking water. These levels are high enough that certain groups—pregnant people, those who are lactating, and infants—should consider using a different water source for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby formula.
What are PFAS?
PFAS are man-made chemicals used in everyday items like:
Non-stick cookware
Stain- and water-resistant furniture and clothing
Food packaging
Firefighting foam
How to Reduce Risk:
Use a water filter certified to remove PFAS
Use bottled or filtered water for drinking, cooking, and mixing formula
Do not boil water—this does not remove PFAS
Is It Safe to Bathe or Wash?
Yes. PFAS don’t absorb well through skin, so it’s okay to shower, bathe, do laundry, or wash dishes with the water.
What About Lactating?
Continue lactating. Experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, say the benefits outweigh the risks—even if PFAS are present.
