A story for you on this Sunday afternoon from the amazing world of Creston Village:
This past week, we celebrated with Maria, one of our amazing servers here at the building - who is expecting her first child, a little boy named Ezra. Once word got out that one of everybody's favorite staff members was having a baby, we could not hold back the ground swell to have a staff and resident combined Baby Shower for them!
As I served as the microphone guy for the group, I smiled at just how many Moms - young and not-so-young were in the room. A quick tally revealed that among the 75 folks in attendance that there were a combined 115 babies that had been reared and raised by the women in the room. So, since we were sitting on a treasure trove of advice for Maria, I decided to open the floor to let her be showered with some time tested parenting advice as well as all sorts of cute gifts. The answers were beautiful and varied. Some funny. Some serious. Some silly.
But, one stood out, and I share it here with permission.
After about 20 minutes of sharing time, a woman who is currently battling some serious newly onsetting memory impairment challenges bravely raised her hand. Deliberatly, sweetly, directly, she said:
"Kids say the cutest things. My advice is to always write them down. Because in the moment, you think you'll remember them forever. But, you won't. You'll forget them."
Now, she didn't mean it in light of her challenges. However, for everybody in the room who knows this woman well, it reverberated like a bolt of lightning. As her disease process is starting to rob her of memories of her children in their youth and even what she did that same day, it was a sound reminder to everybody present.
So, heed her advice - write down those things that matter most to you, because, as she stated: you think you'll remember them forever... but you just won't.
Here's to a lifetime of amazing memories for Maria and her little boy, Ezra.
Reminder, Maria - I get to hold him first when he comes to visit Mom's workplace. (Them's the rules.)
Best,
