Hills I’ll die on as a myofunctional therapist:

1. Your mouth is not an island. Oral dysfunction will affect your whole body.

2. Even “mild” tongue ties can have a major impact on function. The physical exam is only 1 piece of the puzzle; function shouldn’t be ignored, nor downplayed.

3. If the teeth are misaligned, there is underlying muscular dysfunction.

4. Childhood teeth grinding is not something to ignore.

The ENTIRE body is connected. When we start looking at the root instead of just the symptoms, everything changes. ✨

The secret is out! Mouth breathing impacts your oral health in a BIG way.

When you breathe through your mouth, saliva production decreases. Saliva is essential for washing away bacteria and neutralizing acids in the mouth. Without it, harmful bacteria thrive, creating the perfect environment for cavities to form.

Chronic mouth breathing can also lead to:
• Dry mouth
• Increased plaque & tartar buildup
• Gingivitis
• Higher risk of tooth decay
• An unhealthy gut microbiome

The good news? This is something we address.

If you or your child often breathes through the mouth (day or night), it’s time to take a closer look.

Small exercise. Big results.

At Gulf South Myofunctional Therapy, we focus on simple, intentional movements that create lasting change. This exercise may look easy, but when done consistently, it can improve lip seal, support proper breathing, and strengthen the muscles that impact everything from sleep to overall health.

The key? Consistency over complexity.

If you’ve been dealing with mouth breathing, clenching, poor sleep, or oral dysfunction, small habits can make a big difference.

Ready to feel the results for yourself?

Let’s get started.

We all worry about crooked teeth when it comes to our kiddos- that’s a legitimate concern. But parents are, more often than not, told that there is nothing to be done about crooked/crowded teeth until all, or most, of their baby teeth are lost.

My question is: Why not implement an easy program that encourages healthy jaw growth (& straight teeth) as early as possible?!
Because here’s the truth:
Poor jaw development = Crowded teeth & suboptimal airway development!

From poor gut health to poor sleep, if we can get ahead of it, it saves you and your kiddo from a plethora of health issues that are often written off as “normal”.

We CAN help! Schedule a consult and see if Myofunctional therapy is the right next step for you and your family!

This is who you’re talking to when you have questions about tongue ties or mouth breathing.

This work is deeply personal to me. I’ve walked through both of these experiences in my own life, and they completely changed the way I understand oral health, breathing, and overall wellness.

Because of that, helping others navigate tongue ties, airway concerns, and mouth breathing isn’t just my job - it’s something I genuinely care about.

When you’ve experienced the impact firsthand, you understand how much the right support and information can matter.

If you’ve ever wondered whether tongue ties or mouth breathing could be affecting you or your child, you’re not alone.

I’m always happy to help answer questions and guide you toward the right resources.

✨ What Is Myofunctional Therapy? ✨

Myofunctional therapy is a personalized program of exercises and stretches designed to retrain the muscles of the lips, tongue, and face.

When these muscles develop atypical patterns, the body compensates and those compensations can lead to a variety of concerns affecting breathing, swallowing, speech, and oral health.
These atypical muscle patterns are known as Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). By addressing the root cause, myofunctional therapy helps restore proper function and balance to the orofacial muscles 💙

Many mouth-breathing kids go to bed with nervous systems still stuck on high alert after a long, stimulating day. When the body is in fight or flight, it’s harder to relax the jaw, rest the tongue, or shift into nasal breathing.

One of the easiest ways to provide emotional connection, and a solution, is to encourage conversation before bed.

Try asking about their day at dinner, taking deep breaths, & helping them relax before it’s time to get into bed in order to disarm the nervous system and help them get restorative sleep.

Let’s talk about palatal expansion. While it currently seems to be a “trend” on social media, it’s actually been a part of orthodontic treatment for a very long time. Let’s explain!

A narrow palate can impact:
Nasal breathing vs. Mouth breathing
Tongue posture and resting position
Airway size and sleep quality
Chronic congestion, allergies, & sinus issues
Overall facial growth and posture

A broad, U-Shaped palate supports healthy breathing, proper tongue-to-palate resting position, and better airflow.
Curious about what is best for you or your child?

Small changes. Big transformations. ✨

Myofunctional therapy isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about consistent, subtle shifts that add up over time. Small adjustments in breathing, tongue posture, and muscle function can create powerful, lasting changes in how you sleep, breathe, and feel every day.

This before-and-after is a great reminder that progress doesn’t have to be loud to be life-changing. With guidance and consistency, the body can relearn healthier patterns and truly thrive.
