Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

Shakeis was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey on March 28, 2025, in critical condition. She arrived on full ventilator support and was unable to safely swallow, speak, or sit up due to profound weakness and stiffness. In addition to her respiratory challenges, she faced multiple serious medical conditions, including a stage 4 pressure injury to her sacrum, a surgical wound on her left groin, and gangrenous tissue on both feet.

With the support of Kindred East New Jersey’s interdisciplinary team, Shakeis made steady and inspiring
progress. By April 11, she reached a major milestone: remaining on a tracheostomy collar for 72 hours. Soon after, she began using a Passy-Muir Valve to communicate and prepare for decannulation. On April 21, she was successfully decannulated and transitioned to a nasal cannula at 3 liters. She regained her voice, passed her swallowing evaluations, and was able to move from PEG tube feedings to enjoying a regular diet.

Physically, Shakeis went from being completely bedbound to sitting and standing with the help of two staff members. Her rehabilitation team guided her every step of the way, helping her rebuild strength and mobility through targeted exercises and therapy.

Her wound healing also showed significant improvement. The surgical wound on her left groin fully resolved, her sacral wound made meaningful progress, and the gangrenous areas on her toes remained stable and free of infection.

Throughout her stay, Shakeis remained positive and determined. She especially loved the flowers and photos brought in by her family, which brightened her room and lifted her spirits each day. Shakeis’s recovery is a powerful testament to her resilience, the unwavering love of her family, and the dedication of her care team. We are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished—and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.

Kenneth was transferred to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey from our sister hospital in Dover in April. Upon his arrival, he was on a tracheostomy collar with room air and admitted in preparation for a scheduled procedure with our ENT specialist, Dr. Folk, who maintains operating room privileges at our facility.

The day after Kenneth's admission, Dr. Folk successfully completed the procedure, and Kenneth was decannulated in the operating room without any complications. In accordance with policy, our clinical team closely monitored the stoma site post-operatively to ensure proper healing and prevent infection.

Kenneth had already made significant progress during his stay in Dover and arrived at Kindred East ambulatory with the assistance of a walker. During his time with us, the therapy team focused on advancing his mobility and independence. Through consistent rehabilitation efforts, Kenneth progressed from requiring minimal assistance to only contact guard support for transfers, gait, and upper body activities of daily living (ADLs).

One week after his procedure, Kenneth was discharged in stable condition. His time at Kindred East reflects the importance of continuity of care and teamwork across facilities to help patients regain independence and achieve their recovery goals.

Alicia was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey in early April. She arrived on a non-rebreather mask receiving 100% oxygen and had severely limited activity tolerance and endurance. Due to the severity of her respiratory status, even sitting at the edge of the bed required the assistance of two to three therapists, and she was fully dependent for all activities of daily living (ADLs). She also had a sacral wound that required close monitoring and specialized care.

Alicia had a slow start to recovery, largely due to shortness of breath with any exertion. However, our interdisciplinary team immediately began working with her and transitioned her to high-flow oxygen at 100% FiO2 and 20 liters. Initially, she was hesitant about the high flow at first, but with encouragement and close monitoring, she slowly began to tolerate it. Her FiO2 was titrated down as her respiratory status gradually improved. Less than two weeks later, after steady progress, Alicia was successfully weaned from high-flow oxygen to a nasal cannula at six liters and was eventually discharged on four liters.

By the time of her discharge, Alicia was transferring from her bed to a chair with minimal assistance, walking short distances with a rolling walker, and performing all upper body ADLs with only distant supervision. Her sacral wound, though not yet fully resolved, showed improvement thanks to consistent wound care and increased mobility.

Throughout her stay, Alicia also found moments of happiness that helped her through her recovery. She enjoyed spending time in the hallway, working on her coloring books and crossword puzzles—simple activities that brought her comfort and joy during her journey.
We are so proud of all she accomplished and grateful to have been part of her healing journey at Kindred Hospital East New Jersey.
