🌍🩸 October 13 is World Thrombosis Day, a global reminder that blood clots can strike silently — and anyone can be at risk. Serena Williams once said, “I was literally on my deathbed,” after surviving a postpartum pulmonary embolism — a moment that shows just how dangerous clots can be.

Blood clots can form in arteries and veins. Arterial clots lead to heart attacks and strokes ❤️🧠, while venous clots cause Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) — sometimes leading to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) 🦵🏽. Thrombosis is behind 1 in 4 deaths globally, and in the U.S. alone, it affects nearly 900,000 people a year, with up to 100,000 lives lost annually.

The truth is, thrombosis often stays invisible — until it affects someone in the spotlight. NBA star Chris Bosh’s career ended due to blood clots. Victor Wembanyama, Damian Lillard, and Gal Gadot have all faced clot-related conditions despite being in peak shape. Their stories highlight what so many experience quietly.

But medicine has come a long way. Thanks to major trials like EINSTEIN-DVT, ATTRACT, and PEERLESS, we now have safer and more effective treatments — from next-gen oral anticoagulants to catheter-directed thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy for severe cases.

At Apex Heart & Vascular, Dr. Anuj Shah and our team bring all these tools together — from advanced clot removal and IVC filters, to PERT team coordination and long-term management for post-thrombotic syndrome. Prevention is just as important: we emphasize early mobilization, compression therapy, and risk assessment in every hospital setting.

💡 What can you do?
• Know the signs: leg pain or swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath.
• Move often & hydrate to prevent clots.
• Ask your healthcare team about clot prevention when hospitalized.
• Share stories like Serena’s, Bosch, and Gal Gadot, — because awareness saves lives.

Let’s make this World Thrombosis Day more than just a date. Let’s make it a movement. Together, we can prevent clots, protect limbs, and save lives. ❤️💪🏽

🧦 As PAD Awareness Month comes to a close, our Apex Heart & Vascular team is proud to rock one white sock for the White Sock Campaign – a simple symbol for a serious cause. We stand in solidarity with PAD patients and amputees, and we’re starting conversations that save lives.

PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) affects over 10 million Americans , yet it often goes undiagnosed until it’s too late. The result? About 150,000 Americans undergo leg amputations every year – and shockingly, half of those happen without any prior vascular screening . It doesn’t have to be this way.

Early diagnosis is everything. A quick, non-invasive test – an Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI), Toe-Brachial Index (TBI), or vascular ultrasound – can catch PAD in time to treat it. That means fewer amputations and more lives saved.

This month, we partnered with Save A Leg, Save A Life () – a national nonprofit leading the fight to reduce preventable amputations through community education and early detection . Together, we’ve been out in the community raising awareness, providing screenings, and proving that prevention is possible.

To our Apex team: thank you for pouring your hearts into this cause all month long – from educating patients to screening those at risk. We’ve made a difference, but our work isn’t done. 💪

Let’s keep the momentum going beyond September. Know your risk. Get screened. Talk to your doctor about PAD. Share this message. Every conversation and early test could mean another leg saved, another life kept whole.

Join us in the fight to end PAD – together, let’s save legs and lives.

Today is World Heart Day — and a reminder that heart health isn’t just about cholesterol or blood pressure. It’s also about your legs.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is more than a leg problem. It’s a red flag for dangerous cardiovascular disease. People living with PAD are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack (JACC, 2020).

This matters because PAD is common — affecting over 8.5 million Americans — and too often goes undiagnosed until it’s advanced. But early detection is possible with simple, non-invasive tests such as ABI (ankle–brachial index), TBI (toe–brachial index), and vascular ultrasound. Identifying PAD early gives patients the chance to start guideline-based medical therapy, control risk factors, and, when needed, revascularize before tissue loss or heart attack occurs.

During PAD Awareness Month, we’re proud to partner with the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation () to raise awareness and bring education and screening to the patients who need it most. Together, we’re working to close the gap between early detection and life-saving intervention.

If you have diabetes, smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a history of heart disease, ask about PAD testing. Early recognition protects not just your legs — but your heart.

✈️ Claudication → Ischemia → Amputation. For too many patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), this is the journey when the disease isn’t caught in time.

📊 The numbers tell the story:
- PAD affects more than 8.5 million Americans.
- Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. undergoes a major limb amputation.
- Nearly 50% of those amputations happen without any prior vascular test (JAMA Surgery, 2018).
- After a major amputation, the 5-year mortality is 40–70% — higher than breast, colon, or prostate cancer.

🩺 What makes PAD especially dangerous is that it often hides. Up to half of patients have no symptoms at all — no leg pain, no claudication. For many, the first sign is a wound that won’t heal… or an amputation.

✅ But there’s good news: PAD can be detected early with minimally invasive testing. ABI, TBI, vascular ultrasound, and stress testing can uncover disease long before it turns into critical limb ischemia.

📖 The science is clear.
BEST-CLI showed that with good vein conduit, bypass lowers limb events and death. BASIL-2 proved that an endovascular-first approach improves amputation-free survival. VOYAGER-PAD confirmed that adding low-dose rivaroxaban to aspirin after revascularization reduces both cardiovascular and limb events.

🤝 This September, during PAD Awareness Month, we are proud to partner with the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation ( ). SALSAL’s work in communities nationwide — raising awareness, improving access to screenings, and uniting physicians — is making a real impact. Together, we share one mission: no patient should face amputation before being offered vascular testing.

👉 If you or someone you care for is over 60, has diabetes, a smoking history, or non-healing wounds — don’t wait for symptoms. Ask about PAD testing. Early diagnosis doesn’t just save limbs. It saves lives.

Sometimes, the most serious disease has no warning signs. Screening Early Saves Lives!

📈 Studies show that 20–50% of people with PAD don’t experience classic leg symptoms. In one large cohort, 62% of patients with ABI ≤0.90 reported no claudication or leg pain whatsoever. (Behroozian et al., Asymptomatic Peripheral Arterial Disease: Silent but Deadly, 2021)

That’s why early, minimally invasive testing is essential. Simple tools like ABI, TBI, exercise ABI, and vascular ultrasound can detect PAD before it advances to non-healing wounds, critical limb ischemia, or amputation.

And the evidence is clear:
• BEST-CLI showed that surgical bypass offers superior outcomes when good vein conduit is available.
• BASIL-2 demonstrated that an endovascular-first approach improves amputation-free survival in infrapopliteal disease.
• VOYAGER-PAD and COMPASS proved that optimized antithrombotic therapy reduces both limb and cardiovascular events.

This September, we are proud to partner with the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation (). SALSAL’s work in communities across the country has been transformational — from raising awareness to empowering patients and providers to recognize PAD earlier. By promoting education, access to screening, and multidisciplinary collaboration, SALSAL has helped countless patients get tested before it’s too late. Together, our shared mission is simple: no patient should face amputation without first having the chance for vascular testing.

🗓️ Don’t miss our webinar on September 17th: Debunking Myths and Understanding Peripheral Arterial Disease, featuring Dr. Anuj Shah and Dr. Lynette Morrison. We’ll break down the latest evidence and show how early testing changes outcomes.

👉 If you care for patients with diabetes, a smoking history, leg pain, or non-healing wounds, remember: don’t wait for symptoms. Early PAD testing saves both limbs and lives.

👣 1 in 8 adults over 60 has Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).
(CDC, 2024)

PAD is more common than most people realize, and yet it often goes undiagnosed until it’s too late. For many, the first sign of PAD isn’t leg pain — it’s a non-healing wound or even an amputation. Early testing through simple, non-invasive exams like ABI, TBI, or vascular ultrasound can detect PAD before it becomes life-threatening.

📅 September is PAD Awareness Month, and at Apex Heart & Vascular, we are committed to changing the story. This month, we are proud to partner with the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation () to bring more attention to this disease, share vital resources, and fight for earlier recognition and intervention.

📌 Don’t forget: on September 17th, Dr. Anuj Shah and Dr. Lynette Morrison will lead our educational webinar Debunking Myths and Understanding Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Panel Discussion.

👉 Awareness is the first step. Action saves lives and limbs. Stay tuned all month long as we continue to share facts, stories, and resources.

🚨 50% of amputations happen without a prior vascular test. 🚨
(JAMA Surgery)

That means thousands of patients across the U.S. undergo life-changing amputations without ever being offered the chance for early vascular testing, simple imaging, angiography, or revascularization. This is one of the most devastating realities of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) — a condition that affects over 9 million Americans (CDC, 2024).

📅 September is PAD Awareness Month, and at Apex Heart & Vascular, we are committed to changing this story. Early diagnosis through simple, non-invasive tests like ABI, TBI, and vascular ultrasound can detect PAD before it leads to critical limb-threatening ischemia and amputation.

This month, we are proud to partner with the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation (), a national leader dedicated to reducing preventable amputations through education, advocacy, and collaboration. Together, we’re working to ensure no patient loses a limb before having the opportunity for proper testing and intervention.

📅 Today marks the opening of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Awareness Month

PAD is one of the most overlooked and undertreated conditions in the United States, despite its devastating impact. Every 2 minutes, someone in our country loses a limb to PAD — and nearly half of those amputations happen without a prior vascular test (JAMA Surgery). That statistic alone reminds us why awareness, education, and early detection are so critical.

This year, Apex Heart & Vascular is proud to stand alongside the Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation (). SALSAL has been a national leader in the fight against amputation — bringing together physicians, patients, and communities to promote earlier diagnosis, provide education, and advocate for limb preservation. Their mission reflects the very heart of what we strive for at Apex: preventing avoidable suffering and saving lives through better care.

📌 As part of this month’s initiatives, we invite you to join our upcoming webinar on September 17th: Debunking Myths and Understanding Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Panel Discussion, featuring Dr. Anuj R. Shah and Dr. Lynnette Morrison.

👉 Stay tuned throughout September as we share more facts, resources, and events dedicated to PAD awareness. This month is about more than awareness — it’s about action, prevention, and hope.

DVT Awareness Month – The Silent Killer You Can’t Ignore

Every six minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from a blood clot. That’s over 100,000 deaths a year—many of which could have been prevented.

🩸 Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) forms in a deep vein, often in the legs or arms. If a clot breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE)—which can be fatal within minutes. Half of DVT cases have no symptoms.

Who’s at Risk?

🚶‍♂️ Sitting for long periods (travel, desk jobs)
🦵 Surgery or hospitalization
🩸 Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy
❤️ Heart disease, obesity, or cancer

Symptoms You Can’t Ignore

⚠️ Swelling in one leg or arm
⚠️ Pain or cramping that won’t go away
⚠️ Skin that’s red, warm, or discolored
⚠️ Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain

🔬 Recent studies prove early detection saves lives:
✅ HOME-PE Trial (2020): Many PE patients can now be treated at home with blood thinners.
✅ ONCO-DVT Trial (2023): Extending anticoagulation reduced clot recurrence from 7.2% to 1.0%.

DVT is preventable and treatable—if caught early. If you have risk factors or symptoms, don’t wait. Schedule a screening today!
