💙 In recognition of Maternal Health Awareness Day, the Comprehensive Maternity Center from St, Joseph's Health was proud to host an event titled “Holding Ground on Maternal Mental Health.”

The program opened with remarks from Dr. Roger Kierce, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and featured a powerful keynote from Chavi Eve Karkowsky, MD of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, emphasizing the critical role mental health plays in pregnancy and postpartum care. Dr. Aiswarya Nair gave a moving analysis on preventing posttraumatic stress disorder following childbirth.

We were also honored to share a patient story introduced by Dr. David Principe, another moving speaker from The Madd Ox Foundation, followed by a multidisciplinary panel moderated by Dr. Kerly Guerrero and Dr. Claudia Herreros. Panelists included Yessenia Mercedes from Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern NJ, Nicole Marshal from Family Connects NJ, Liliana Morales from the New Jersey Hospital Association, Pamela Taylor from the New Jersey Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority, and Fiorella Vera from the Health Coalition of Passaic County.

Maternal mental health is essential to healthy families and healthy communities and it deserves continued attention, compassion, and action.

🚧 We marked a major milestone for St. Joseph’s Health as we officially broke ground on an expanded Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center.

This project represents a meaningful investment in the health and vitality of Northern New Jersey: to expand access and to ensure our community has the emergency care it needs in a modern, convenient space. The latest upgrade builds on recent campus enhancements, including our Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbarics and new MRI suite designed to deliver faster, more precise diagnoses.

We’re grateful to our Board of Trustees, Foundation Board, elected officials, physician leaders, and community partners who joined us to mark this moment. Philanthropic support will continue to play a critical role as we move this important project forward.

Please note: we are expanding into vacant space so there will be no interruptions to our current Emergency Department operations.
