Michael A. Mele

MELE, ESQ., MICHAEL A., 66, of Hawthorne, formerly of Hackensack, died peacefully on Thursday, December 4, 2025 after an unrelenting battle with leukemia. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Peter Anthony Mele, and his mother, Paola Maranesi Mele. He is survived by his loving wife, Shannon; his siblings, Paola DeVita (Frank), Peter Mele, and Christopher Mele (Anne); his nieces Cristina, Diana, and Quinn; and his nephews Frank, Peter, and Christopher, to whom he was also devoted godfather, and beloved friends.

All will forever treasure his warmth, humor, wit, and guidance. Michael grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, and graduated from Bergen Catholic High School. He then attended Manhattanville College and Valparaiso Law School. He began his legal career with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s office before transitioning into private practice, where he excelled in his field. Over 35 years, he built a reputation as a brilliant, thoughtful, and formidable attorney, known for his intellect, knowledge and prowess. In 2022, he embraced a new chapter in his legal career with Day Break Express Trucking, approaching the work with the same diligence, dedication, and intellectual curiosity that defined his life and career. Michael’s passions were as wide-ranging as they were deep. He was a lifelong lover of cars and motorsport—especially drag racing and Formula 1—and even built his own race cars. He treasured music, attending live concerts and collecting vinyl records, as well as playing both the drums and guitar. He was happiest with tools in his hands, tinkering with anything mechanical, particularly his cherished yellow Mustang GT. In 2020, he discovered a new passion and skill for bird photography, joyfully venturing out at 3 a.m. with friends to capture images of his beloved warblers. He cherished time at the beach, especially his childhood family vacations on Long Beach Island, which always held a special place in his heart. Michael possessed a rare combination of strength and gentleness. He was the family storyteller and advisor—deliberate and direct in his words, yet unfailingly kind, loving, and always willing to help. He was a devoted husband, a caring brother, uncle, and godfather as well as a loyal friend who brought warmth and laughter to everyone. He faced his disease with the same unwavering courage, resilience, and strength that defined his life. Michael will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Friends and Family will be received on Tuesday, December 9th, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Manke Memorial @ Scillieri-Arnolde Funeral Home, 351 Fifth Avenue, Paterson. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 10th at 9:30 AM at St. Anthony RC Church, Hawthorne. Cremation will be private.
