Dennis M. Cooney

COONEY, DENNIS M., 74, of Bloomfield, New Jersey, formerly of Missouri City, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson.

Born in Orange, NJ, in 1951, Dennis was the son of the late William and Shirley Cooney. He was predeceased by his brother Steven Cooney. He is survived by his brother Daniel Cooney and Daniel’s wife, Margaret Harris; his nephew, Philip Cooney; his cousin, Laura Pflug; and his lifelong friend, Sally Kent. Dennis also leaves behind many friends and extended family whose lives he touched with his warmth and wit.

Dennis spent much of his career as a retail manager in New York City before relocating to Houston, Texas, in the 1980s. In his later years, he found joy behind the bar as a bartender extraordinaire—always quick with a drink, a b***y joke, and a strong opinion. His charisma and humor made him unforgettable.

A devoted animal lover, Dennis never turned away a creature in need. His home was a haven for pets, and his heart was open to all.

In accordance with his wishes, Dennis’s ashes will be scattered in the Texas Hill Country, his favorite place to fish, camp, and find peace.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his generosity, his laughter, and the unmistakable spark he brought to every room.

In 2008, a few years after the birth of his grandson, he and his wife, Taralaben Mehta, moved from India to the United States of America, where he lived the remainder of his life with his son and daughter’s families.
