During a public health threat, a state, tribal entity, directly funded city, or territory can request federal assistance for emergency medical countermeasures from the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). As threats are identified, jurisdictions should act quickly to request federal assistance. Contact the HHS Secretary’s Operations Center (SOC) at 202-619-7800. The Paulding County MRC Corps urges every family to use this day as a reminder to ensure the seniors in your life are emergency-ready.

Your Grandparents Day Preparedness Checklist:

Water & Food: Do they have at least 3 days of water (1 gallon per person per day) and non-perishable food?

Power Needs: Do they have a backup power plan for medical equipment? Extra batteries for hearing aids?

Medication: Is there a 7-day supply readily available?

Paperwork: Are important documents (IDs, insurance, medical info) in a waterproof, easy-to-grab container?

Connection: Do they have a battery-powered or crank radio to receive alerts if the power is out?

Get free resources and checklists for the whole family: ready.gov or call the Paulding County Health Department Emergency Preparedness Department 419-399-3921 and ask for help.

On this Patriot Day, we remember the incredible courage and sacrifice of the first responders on 9/11. Here in Paulding County, we are blessed to have that same spirit of service alive in our first responders.

Our community, like so many in rural America, relies almost entirely on volunteers. Consider this:

Nationwide, 67% of firefighters are volunteers.
In Ohio, that number is over 80%. For communities like ours, it's nearly 100%.

This means our firefighters, EMTs, and emergency personnel are our neighbors. They leave their families and jobs at a moment's notice to help others, asking for nothing in return. The value they provide is immeasurable, both in safety and in economic savings for our county.

Today, please join me in offering a heartfelt THANK YOU to these everyday heroes. Their dedication is the foundation of our community's safety and resilience.

If you see a first responder—a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or law enforcement officer—please take a moment to offer a simple "thank you." That small gesture of recognition means more than you know.

And if you've ever felt the call to serve, consider honoring the legacy of 9/11 by strengthening our community's resilience. The Medical Reserve Corps is always looking for both medical and non-medical volunteers to support our public health and emergency response efforts.

We will never forget.

✅ Know your child’s route to school and review the school’s emergency plan.
📅 Prepare TODAY by having a plan for dealing with emergencies.
🚗 The public is also encouraged to safely call #677 to report reckless or impaired drivers and drug activity. #677 is a way to report dangerous driving, impaired drivers, or suspected drug activity in Ohio—including Paulding County. It’s an alternative to calling 911 when the situation is non-emergent but still requires attention from law enforcement.
