Shelly Ann (Neal-Sollars-Brewer) Straw, RN, BSN age 55 finished her race on 18 January 2024 at her brothers’ farmhouse in Covington, Louisiana. Shelly was proceeded in death by her Father Jerry D Neal. Shelly left behind her husband Captain Jason Lee Straw USAF, Nurse Corp (Retired), Her mother Bonnie Jean Neal. Three siblings Jerry D Neal, Kellie Sue (Neal-Pauley) Huffman, and Tammy Diana (Neal) Verdin. Two children Amy Marie Brewer, and Kyle Brewer along with two grandchildren.
Shelly’s life was focused on taking care and loving her family. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She loved spending time at Hill Lake Resort with family and friends.
She was a 2012 graduate from Indiana University of Kokomo, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with Honors. She worked as a consultant, sharing her csnnibus research & work with physicians/scientist all over the world. She was tickled pink that her hero Raphael Mechulam “The grandfather of cannabis research” corresponded with her for over a year, answering many of her cannabis questions.
In 2016, she was working in the Marion General Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). During that time her son was having debilitating migraines. She then began looking for treatment options. This led her to the endocannabinoid system(ECS) research.
In 2017 h**p CBD was legal in Indiana so she was then able to start a company named “The Hempin Nurse." She began designing CBD products and educating her clients on the ECS. Which she then sold to the lead hospitalist for the local hospitals. After this she walked out of her ICU job to pursue her cannabis industry career. Educating her clients gave her great joy. Helping others was her lifelong passion.
In 2018, she met and became friends with some of the Michigan patient caregivers. She them started spending every weekend driving to Michigan, learning how to grow medical cannabis and making cannabis products. She continued to learn a tremendous amount which led her to want to relocate to Michigan. This move would allow her to grow her own medical cannabis so she could treat herself using her own products. Shelly has several medical conditions which qualify for medical cannabis; Degenerative Disk Disease (to the point of having 3 cadaver bones, a plate, 8 screws and stem cells in her neck) Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and cyclic vomiter. She had torn all 3 hamstring tendons off her pelvic bone from a motorcycle accident, (having pins and brackets in 3 locations in her pelvic bone) which contributed her to being a chronic high pain patient. While She was in Indiana she was prescribed Marinol for her pain and nausea. Once Shelly moved to Michigan, her physician recommended Cannabis for her many medical conditions.
She sold her home in 2019 to move to Michigan. She then ended up homeless in Indiana because of covid restrictions. During this time Indiana NORML sent Jason Straw to meet her because of her cannabis advocacy work. They married 5 months later in July 2020.
Shelly and Jason advocated for safe medical cannabis reform in Indiana working closely with many Hoosier and other states Cannabis Grassroots/research efforts such as University of Michigan Anesthesiology Department Cannabis and Cannabinoid studies, Michigan Weedsters, Michigan Patient Care Givers, Indiana & Michigan NORML, First Church of Cannabis, Hoosier Veterans for Medical Cannabis (HVMC), Bloomington/Greenwood/Kokomo Pride, Hoosier Libertarian/Democrat/Republican pro-cannabis candidates, Alabama Cannabis Coalition, Richard Tyson at Marion, Indiana Chanel 27 News, DREEM, Davidson Greenhouse & Nursery Inc. and many more.
