I know, I know… not trying to be a killjoy… just hear me out…

When we let our kids jump in and we catch them vertically with their head up out of the water, we are reinforcing the vertical, “drowning position”. 👎🏻

👍🏻Instead, let your child jump in and swim with their eyes in the water to your hands, swim a short distance and float, or swim to the side of the pool! All of these alternatives reinforce self-rescue swimming techniques and will lead to a more competent and confident swimmer! 😉

Regardless of what sport you love or play this summer, the all kids should learn is swimming and water competency.

Drowning is the number one killer of toddlers in America, which means water competency is more than just a sport; it's a vital survival skill.

Our campaign has one goal, encouraging parents and caregivers everywhere to consider swimming and water competency the first priority before enrolling their kids in other extra curricular activities.

What 3 weeks and just six sessions of swim lessons can do……..July and August sessions are enrolling, and each of theses sessions has 8 lessons.

Age 7, started as a non swimmer who would not get his head wet 4 weeks ago - now…..floating, swimming, diving for toys, doing somersaults, starting to learn actual strokes

Age 5, started as a non swimmer who would not get his head wet….now, floating and swimming, going under, learning to roll into his float

Age 3, started out being terrified and clinging to mom…..now, grabbing the wall, starting to go under, getting him used to his back float, becoming more relaxed and learning plane on the water on his tummy, reaching for the steps and ladder

Age 3, started out very resistant to try things, did not like being on her back, now….going under, swimming between people, grabbing the wall, learning to circle swim away from and back to the steps, and is in a relaxed position on her back in the water, starting to float independently

Age 2, started very resistant, especially to getting her head wet. Now going under water, starting to swim to the steps, reaching up to grab the wall, getting to her more relaxed in an assisted float, crawling out of the pool on her own

20 months- Not scared of the water, planes his body, falls off the side, goes under, turns to grab the wall assisted, easily floats on back partially assisted, jumps off steps, swims underwater to instructor, learning to roll

Age 5- returning student who started to swim independently last summer. She is amazing, swimming all over the pool, so confident, rolling, floating, diving for toys, learning bigger swim strokes

Age 3, returning student. Started this year with being afraid to put her ears in the water, and her head under. She is now swimming under water, independently floating, and working so hard at learning to roll over into her float on her own. She started circle swimming for breath control last week.

14 year old-Had trauma with water, a near drowning experience and a lot of fear and anxiety. She has conquered a lot of fear and anxiety. She can now float, roll to float, swim with face in and out of water, is swimming independently in the deep end, jumps off the side, can turn to grab edge or continue swimming to safety. Is becoming much more confident and relaxed.

Would you like your child to progress in being a safe and confident swimmer? July and August registration is in progress. Feel free to DM me or call to ask any questions….Little Dippers Swim School Nikki Barnett

Did you know, the color of your child's swimsuit can make a significant difference in what you can clearly see under the water?

Neon colors, especially neon orange, are the most visible under water – either in a pool or open water like Lake Kampeska. Think bright & contrasting – wear a color that contrasts the most with either the bottom of the pool, lake, river, or ocean.

As helpful as a neon swimsuit may be, adult supervision continues to be the most effective way to keep children safe in the water - remember to designate one responsible adult to watch swimmers at a time. Take turns throughout the day and encourage children to take periodic swim breaks to give everybody time to relax and recharge.
