Today, the Osage Nation Health System proudly marks 10 Years of Self-Governance in Healthcare.
This milestone reflects both an achievement and a lasting commitment to building a health system shaped by, and for, the Osage people.
Ten years ago, the Osage Nation took a historic step toward self-determination by assuming management of the Pawhuska Clinic through a compact with the Indian Health Service (IHS). This achievement was made possible through the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975, later strengthened by the IHS Self-Governance Act of 2000.
In 2014, the Osage Nation Congress unanimously passed Resolution ONCR 14-15, formally requesting entry into the IHS Tribal Self-Governance Program. The compact soon followedโsigned by Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear on July 24, 2015, and finalized by the Director of IHS on September 28, 2015.
ONHS extends deep gratitude to Osage leadership, citizens, and advocates whose vision and dedication made this historic step possible. Together, we continue to shape a healthier future for the Osage Nation.
