Since 1992, HIA has been the leading provider of compliance audits, coding support services and clinical documentation audit services for hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, physician groups and other healthcare entities. Prior to 1992, Betsy held Director of HIM positions at two hospitals in Virginia. Deane has over thirty years of experience as an administrator working in various hospitals th

roughout the Southeast. The HIA family knows what counts – experience, commitment, integrity, and education. The success we’ve experienced these past 30 years is due in large part to our dedication to these values. Not just data entry.

This work takes clinical knowledge, coding expertise, critical thinking, and a strong understanding of regulations—every single day.

It’s not about copying documentation. It’s about interpreting it, applying guidelines, and knowing when to dig deeper.

And when coding teams are supported and included, everything works better.

Let’s hear it for the work that keeps healthcare moving—HIP Week starts next week 👏

From coding accuracy to data integrity to compliance, this work drives quality reporting, financial performance, and patient safety every single day.

As HIP Week approaches, take a moment to ask:
• Are coding teams supported with ongoing education?
• Are documentation gaps addressed early?
• Is data being used to inform decisions—or just reported?

Because this work matters—and it deserves to be recognized.

By noon, medical coders have already made dozens of judgment calls — diagnosis selection, documentation interpretation, guideline application, and more.

If you feel mentally drained halfway through the day, it’s not a productivity issue. It’s decision fatigue — and it’s real.

We break down why medical coding triggers decision fatigue so quickly and what experienced coders do to protect accuracy and confidence. https://hubs.ly/Q048D9Gm0

Two pressure ulcers. One ICD-10-CM code. Different POA indicators.

What should be reported?

When multiple conditions classify to the same ICD-10-CM code during a single encounter, coding rules only allow the diagnosis code to be reported once. But what happens when one condition was present on admission and another develops during the stay?

This coding scenario can create confusion for even experienced coders.

In this blog, we break down the ICD-10-CM Present on Admission reporting guidelines and explain how to assign the correct POA indicator when multiple conditions map to the same code. https://hubs.ly/Q04b80s-0
