Many people find it helpful to journal about their feelings as a way of processing them. For some, this comes incredibly naturally the second they place the pen to a page. They are able to write out exactly what is going on in their mind without thinking about it and feel unburdened by the experience.

But for others, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The frustration they have with being unsure about what to write in the process completely takes over and they lose track of what they were hoping to write about in the first place. Nothing is explored and the only thing gained is slightly more contempt for writing.

This does not mean that writing is lost as an option. It just means that the person writing might find it more helpful to have a more structured way of doing so.

Not only are you struggling with physical symptoms, but there is also an emotional toll as well, and sometimes even judgment by the people in your life.

This can be especially true for “invisible” illnesses, wherein the outward or visible symptoms are not always apparent to others. People may think, “Well, that person doesn’t look sick.” Some examples of these invisible illnesses might include Lupus, Lyme disease, Fibromyalgia, or Multiple Sclerosis, to name a few. Chronic pain, exhaustion, or general discomfort may be suffered without those around us ever knowing. This can be isolating, leaving those suffering with the feeling they are misunderstood, potentially leading to depression, anxiety, or grief.

However, you are not alone.

One of the most daunting aspects to starting therapy is those first few sessions where the two people speaking are nothing more than strangers to one another. Though working through this is the daily experience of any therapist, we recognize and have an understanding that this is not the reality for just everyone. We have zero expectations of the people we work with sharing deep, intimate secrets with us the second they walk into our offices (or telehealth links). That wouldn’t exactly create a very welcoming environment.

There are hundreds of different therapeutic models and treatments that therapists across the globe use to be of service to their clients. It can be difficult to know what treatment is right for you and the symptoms you are experiencing, and it can take time and effort before figuring out that something is or isn’t the best fit.

Though there are many different ways of categorizing therapies, they can largely be sorted into types: talk therapy and behavioral therapy. Each will include elements of the other, but feel free to read further to learn more about what might be the best approach for you.

As mental health providers, we intimately know the incredible power therapy can have in bettering people’s lives. That being said, in knowing its power, we are also aware of its limitations. If a person manages to get an average of eight hours of sleep a night, one hour-long  therapy session per week is only 0.89% of a person’s time. Though therapy is powerful, is a person is only attending to their mental health less than 1% of the week, they will not be able to reap the full benefits of the work.

Here are some ways you can maximize your potential on your therapeutic journey.

As therapists, we regularly incorporate mindfulness or meditation into our work. Nearly every therapeutic model encourages mindfulness as a practice to be more aware of yourself (be that thoughts, feelings, and/or actions), be more aware of how your experiences might be impacting you, and to be used as a positive coping tool.

Here is an example of a mindfulness script that we might use in our work.
