Am I the right doula for you?

It is important that you find a doula that meshes well with your goals and values. I find that I work best with people looking to take action in preparing themselves for the birth they want. I jokingly call myself a "homework doula" because I give my clients things to work on outside of our prenatal meetings. This allows them the opportunity to take responsibility for their own experience. Because even though I am there to support you, this is YOUR body, YOUR birth, YOUR baby, YOUR experience!

If this sounds like the kind of doula support you want, please reach out! I'd be happy to meet you in a free virtual consultation to see if I'm the right fit for you!

So excited to have my very own peanut ball!

The peanut ball is a great tool to use in labor, especially for opening the pelvis while resting. This makes it an AMAZING tool for anyone giving birth with an epidural!

If you plan to have an epidural in your labor, ask for a peanut ball!

I can't wait to bring this along with me to prenatal visits so my clients can have the option to try it out and become familiar with how to use it prior to being in labor!

Also, shout out to any Iron Giant fans! ๐Ÿ˜†

Let's talk a bit about the pelvis!

This is the part of your body that your baby must make their way through in order to have a vaginal birth. This image shows the bone structure that your baby must move through in labor, but there are also so many muscles and ligaments that your baby will navigate through as well.

The beautiful thing about the pelvis is that we can manipulate it in ways that gives baby the best pathway to move down and out.

How?

MOVEMENT!

Movements such as:

-external hip rotation (knees and toes pointed out)
-circles or figure 8s on a birth ball
-tucking your pelvis forward (tucking your tail)
-forward and side lunges
-internal hip rotation (knees in line with hips and heels pointing out)

These are all wonderful movements for opening different parts of the pelvis.

Follow me for more on movement in labor - including how to use movement and position changes to open the pelvis with an epidural.

This beautiful photo of me with my model pelvis was taken by Emily Frank.

Why do we rush the second stage of labor? Why is there a need to push and push as hard as we can once the cervix is fully dilated? It is because of birth culture, NOT physiological design that we rush this stage.

So, what would happen if we honor our physiology? I think our perineums would thank us.

One of the things I cover during prenatal visits with birth clients are comfort measures. We talk about the different options, try some of them out, and I recommend that my clients practice their favorites so they have the opportunity to build trust and familiarity with the techniques they might turn to during labor.

Let's be real here: birth does require surrender. You have to, at some capacity, allow it to unfold how it is meant to unfold. But this does not mean you are powerless. This does not mean you have no control.

To focus on the things you can control and CHOOSE to surrender to the things you cannot control, you can find a sense of empowerment within the surrender of birth.

And I think the key here is: you should only ever be surrendering to YOURSELF and FOR yourself. Your birth belongs to you. Your surrender is YOURS.

I mean it. You deserve to feel empowered in your birth experience! And I truly believe that hiring a doula is one of the things you can do to set yourself up for an empowering birth.

A doula will learn about what having an empowered birth means to YOU and help you navigate how to achieve that experience. And, a doula will be there with you, by your side during labor.

Doulas are support people. We are guardians of the birth space. We are advocates for what you want and need. Our job is to protect your sense of empowerment. To support you in achieving the experience you deserve.
