What was the last movie you saw in theatres? Damon, Tom, Ron, and Scott headed out to Showcase Cinemas for some popcorn, snacks, laughs, and a good flick. 🍿🎦 They saw the recent release of Hoppers. Thanks to our excellent support staff for coordinating this fun community activity!

✨Citizens with Power Service Project✨

One of the most important meetings our self-advocates hold is the service project meeting. They recognize the importance of giving back to community members who have served our country. In the fall, members met and wrote messages of gratitude in holiday-themed greeting cards to be delivered during the holiday season. 📧🇺🇸

Nayib Batista, a job coach in our Employment Services department, shared his experience in the National Guard, answered questions about the military, and explained what it means to be a veteran. Thank you for your service, Nayib, and for sharing your experience with us!

Thank you to our Service Coordinators for coordinating and organizing this valuable project!

We have been creative with finding entertainment indoors! All bets are off when Damon, Ron, Scott, and Tom visit Bally's Twin River Casino. 🎰 They hit the jackpot with Nancy and Maria, their Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). 🎯

❤️🍽️ Date Night at Applebee’s! ❤️

Danny and Margaret enjoyed a wonderful date night at Applebee’s, sharing great food, laughter, and special time together.

It was the perfect time to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Moments like these remind us how important it is to celebrate friendships, independence, and making memories in the community. 💙

We love seeing these smiles!

❤️🕺 Valentine’s Day Fun & Friendship! 💃❤️

Joe, Kevin, Richard, and Kevin had an amazing time at the Valentine’s Day Dance hosted by the North Providence Knights of Columbus! Supported by Michelle and Lilian, the event featured great food, lots of dancing, and plenty of smiles.

The group enjoyed showing off their dance moves, capturing fun memories in the photo booth, and celebrating friendship and community together. 📸✨

Events like these are a wonderful opportunity to connect, have fun, and create lasting memories. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus Dillon Council #3563 for hosting such a fun celebration! 💙💛🧡

Throughout February, we will be highlighting a few Black disability activists who helped shape disability rights as we know them today. 🧡💚💖🖤

In today's Black History and Disability Intersection:
We highlight Lois Curtis. Lois Curtis, a portrait artist who was diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is credited with paving the way for individuals to live in the community and receive the services they need.

"Lois Curtis was placed in Georgia Regional Hospital when she was only 11 years old. She would spend her teenage years and early twenties in and out of various institutions for people with developmental disabilities. She would regularly call the Atlanta Legal Aid Society asking for help getting out. She talked about her desire to leave the institution."

Lois is one of the plaintiffs in the infamous Olmstead Supreme Court decision case in 1999. The Olmstead decision states:

“On June 22, 1999, the United States Supreme Court held in Olmstead v. L.C. that unjustified segregation of persons with disabilities constitutes discrimination in violation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Court held that public entities must provide community-based services to persons with disabilities when
(1) such services are appropriate;
(2) the affected persons do not oppose community-based treatment;
and (3) community-based services can be reasonably accommodated, taking into account the resources available to the public entity and the needs of others who are receiving disability services from the entity."
