Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah: Payson Onion Days’ Worst Float, Best Pain Care

Payson knows how to throw a parade. The Payson Onion Days brings out the best floats, the biggest crowds, and kids with bags ready to haul home more candy than Halloween.

And then there was our float.

We had dreams. We had a 1960s Mercedes-Benz lined up. We had class and confidence. But Payson got “Plan B”: my 2020 Tacoma dressed in some red-and-white fringe with giant colored dots (supposed to be lifesavers) taped to the side. Honestly, it looked like a preschool craft project gone wrong.

Out of 100 floats? Ours was scientifically, medically, and spiritually the worst. And just when the crowd thought it couldn’t get worse, we ran out of candy halfway down the route. Parents gave us the side-eye. Kids looked at us like, “Seriously? That’s it?”

But here’s the deal: Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah isn’t here to win float competitions. We’re here to treat pain. Back pain, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis—basically all the stuff that actually does ruin parades. Unlike our float, our treatments are evidence-based, minimally invasive, and proven to be effective.

The truth? Payson didn’t seem to care about our sad beginner float. The support from this community was amazing, and we’re grateful to be part of Onion Days, candy shortage and all.

So next year? More candy, maybe an actual float. But for now: while you definitely shouldn’t call us for float design, you should call us for pain relief.

PRP & Stem Cell Therapy — Advanced Options for Joint, Tendon, and Spine Pain
If you’re living with chronic joint pain, tendon injuries, or spine pain that hasn’t improved with medications, steroid injections, or even surgery, there may be another path forward.

At Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah, we offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapy — advanced regenerative treatments that work with your body to encourage healing and reduce pain.

What is PRP?
PRP is created by drawing a small sample of your blood and concentrating the platelets, which are rich in growth factors that support tissue repair.

PRP can help with:

Knee arthritis and cartilage loss

Meniscus tears (especially in active patients wanting to avoid surgery)

Tendinitis — jumper’s knee, tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries

Spine pain — including degenerative disc disease (discogenic pain) and facet arthritis (facetogenic pain)

Plantar fasciitis & ligament injuries

Evidence:

2024 meta-analysis of 42 RCTs: PRP gave better pain relief and function than steroids, often lasting 12+ months.

Sports medicine studies: PRP can speed tendon healing and improve recovery time.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy uses mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) — often from your own bone marrow — to deliver living cells that may stimulate tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and slow degeneration.

Potential benefits include:

Moderate knee arthritis

Cartilage injuries

Tendon and ligament damage

Disc degeneration and facet arthritis

While research is ongoing, early results are promising — especially when treated early in the disease process.

Why Choose Regenerative Medicine?
Steroid injections can reduce inflammation, but often wear off in weeks or months and may damage cartilage with repeated use.
PRP and stem cell therapy aim to address the root cause, offering the potential for longer-lasting improvement.

Transparency Note
PRP and stem cell therapy are not FDA-approved for orthopedic use and remain investigational.
Evidence for PRP is strong for several conditions, and stem cells show encouraging results — but outcomes vary by patient.

If you’ve tried everything else and still have pain, we may be able to help — and we can often see new patients this week.

Sciatica: What Is It Really? (And What Most People Get Wrong)
By Dr. Devan Partridge, Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah

“Sciatica” is one of the most common pain complaints we hear — but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Let’s set the record straight: sciatica is not a diagnosis. It’s a symptom. And the root cause is almost always something deeper — usually in the lumbar spine.

So What’s Really Causing That Sciatic Pain?
Over 90% of patients who say they have sciatica are actually dealing with lumbar radiculopathy — a fancy term for pinched or inflamed nerves in the lower back. This nerve irritation, most often from the L5 or S1 nerve roots, causes that classic sharp, burning, or radiating pain down the leg.

Common culprits include:

-Lumbar disc herniations
-Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
-Foraminal narrowing due to arthritis or collapsed discs
-Facet joint overgrowth or cysts

📚 Evidence: A 2014 BMJ review found lumbar disc herniation to be the most common cause of true radiculopathy presenting as “sciatica.”

What About Piriformis Syndrome?
This is one of the few causes of true sciatic nerve compression — when the piriformis muscle in the buttock compresses the sciatic nerve. But here’s the thing: it’s rare (less than 6% of all “sciatica” cases).

We treat piriformis syndrome with:

-Piriformis muscle injections (usually under ultrasound guidance)
-Physical therapy
-Surgical decompression (rarely)

📚 European Spine Journal (Hopayian et al., 2010) confirmed piriformis syndrome is real but uncommon and often overdiagnosed.

Evidence-Based Treatment Options
1. Non-Surgical Care
-Epidural Steroid Injections: (Transforaminal, interlaminar, or caudal) — reduce inflammation around the nerve to make rehab more effective.
-Physical Therapy & Chiropractic Care: Help strengthen core, improve mobility, and correct biomechanics.
-Medications: Neuropathic agents like gabapentin or duloxetine; short-term NSAIDs.

💡 Injections often make rehab more tolerable by controlling pain enough for full participation in therapy.

2. Cutting-Edge Treatments
Regenerative Medicine:

-PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and Stem Cell Injections into discs or epidural space have shown promise.
📚 Akeda et al., Pain Physician 2021; Vadalà et al., Stem Cells Int. 2019

-Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS): FDA-approved for chronic radicular pain after failed conservative care.

-Minimally Invasive Disc Decompression / Endoscopic Discectomy: A surgical alternative for disc-related radiculopathy with shorter recovery.

Bottom Line
If you’re struggling with low back pain that radiates into the leg with associated numbness or tingling, don’t settle for vague answers. “Sciatica” is a common symptom — but at Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah, we’ll help you get to the root cause and build a personalized treatment plan that works.

What Does Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah Offer?

It’s one of the questions we hear most often: “What exactly does your pain clinic do?”

Simply put, we do more than treat pain—we work to target its source, not just mask the symptoms.

Pain is complex. It can come from nerve irritation, joint arthritis, muscle imbalance, spinal degeneration, or inflammation. That's why there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every person deserves a personalized plan.

At our brand new clinic in Payson, Utah, we deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care with dozens of advanced options:

Interventional Procedures to Treat the Source:

-Epidural steroid injections for nerve root inflammation
-Medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation for arthritic joints
-SI joint injections and SI joint fusion for sacroiliac pain
-Basivertebral nerve ablation (Intracept) for vertebrogenic low back pain
-Stellate ganglion blocks for complex regional pain and autonomic dysfunction
-Occipital nerve blocks for headache and neck pain
-Peripheral nerve blocks and peripheral nerve stimulation for difficult nerve pain

Minimally Invasive Spine Solutions:

-Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) trials and implants
-Interspinous fixation devices (like Minuteman) for spinal stability and spinal stenosis
-Minimally invasive lumbar decompression for spinal stenosis

Regenerative Medicine:

-Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy options, prepared in-house with our centrifuge technology

Joint Care:

-All major joint injections (shoulder, hip, knee, etc.)
-Fluoroscopy and ultrasound-guided precision for safety and accuracy

Headache and Cosmetic Treatments:

-Botox for chronic migraines and cosmetic enhancement

Advanced Pain Management Options:

Conservative & Supportive Care:

-Physical therapy referrals tailored to your condition
-Lifestyle, ergonomic, and self-care coaching

Your Comfort Matters:
Unlike many clinics that charge extra for sedation during procedures, we offer sedation at no additional cost because your comfort and experience are our priority.

We’ve invested in state-of-the-art technology—including ultrasound, fluoroscopy, an in-house centrifuge, and comfortable procedure suites—to deliver precise, effective treatments.

And beyond technology, our friendly, highly trained staff is committed to making sure you feel heard, respected, and cared for at every visit.

At Horizon Spine & Pain of Utah, we believe you deserve to understand your pain and have real options to address it.

🌄 Welcome to Horizon Spine and Pain of Utah
📍 Opening May 15, 2025 | Payson, Utah

I’m excited to finally share some big news—Horizon Spine and Pain of Utah is officially opening its doors on May 15th in Payson!

This has been a dream of mine for years. As someone who’s lived with debilitating back pain myself, I know what it’s like to struggle with daily discomfort and how hard it is to find care that truly helps. That personal experience is what led me into this field, and it’s helped me become a better physician.

After going through medical school, anesthesiology residency, and a fellowship in Interventional Spine and Pain at Vanderbilt University, I knew I wanted to bring that knowledge and experience back home to Utah County, where I grew up.

I first helped open a pain clinic in Provo with a larger group based in Salt Lake, but over time, I realized I needed to take a different direction. I wanted to create a practice where patients come first, where care is customized and thoughtful, and where every treatment decision is made with the whole person in mind.

That’s how Horizon Spine and Pain came to life.

At Horizon, we offer comprehensive spine and pain care, ranging from medication management and in-office injections to advanced, minimally invasive procedures like radiofrequency ablation, PRP/stem cell injections, spinal cord stimulators, and more. We’re focused on helping patients improve mobility, reduce pain, and get back to living life fully, with the least invasive options possible.

We’ll be accepting most insurance plans as well as cash pay options with transparent pricing.

📍 You’ll find us at: 15 S 1000 E, Suite 250, Payson, UT
📅 Opening Day: May 15, 2025
🩺 Now scheduling new patients – link to book coming soon!

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or just looking for answers, we’re here to help. I’m incredibly proud to serve the community I love and to offer something truly patient-centered here at Horizon.

Thank you for your support!
