Nikhil Bommakanti, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon who cares for patients with conditions affecting the retina and vitreous. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of retinal disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and posterior vitreous detachment.
Dr. Bommakanti earned his medical degree from Columbia University after completing a one-year research fellowship at the University of Oxford and graduating summa cm laude with a B.S. in bioengineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center, followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital, widely regarded as the top vitreoretinal training program in the United States.
Dr. Bommakanti is currently an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts Medical Center, where he also helps train future retina specialists. He has authored numerous research publications and book chapters and has received multiple honors, including election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the highest distinction for a medical student, and the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award, the most prestigious award for an ophthalmology trainee.
