How does alcohol impact sleep?

For me, it is a lot! I love a social drink especially with good company which was the case Friday night.

Now what if this low sleep quality was happening night after night? It is very challenging to recover and feel fully rested which snowballs into elevated stress, inflammation, decrease in overall performance, cognitive decline just to name a few.

Sleep is King! Drink wisely

While you’re tucked in at night, your body is doing far more than resting. Deep, restorative sleep is when your hormonal system goes into full repair mode:

✨ Growth hormone helps repair tissues and build lean muscle
✨ Blood sugar resets, reducing insulin resistance and keep cravings in check
✨ Your liver can detox, processing hormones like estrogen so they don’t build up.
✨ Thyroid hormones stabilize, setting the pace for energy and metabolism.

When you skimp on sleep (or have restless, fragmented nights), cortisol tends to spike, which can derail hormone balance. Poor sleep can show up as PMS flares, irregular cycles, or even stubborn weight around your middle.

Did you know your liver clears out used up hormones? Once your body is done with estrogen, it needs to be packaged up by the liver and sent out through your gut. If your liver is sluggish because of nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, blood sugar swings, or even toxin exposures estrogen starts to build up.

That build up can look like:

👉 Heavy, clotty periods
👉 Tender breasts or bloating before your cycle
👉 Mood swings + intense PMS
👉 Stubborn weight that sticks around your hips + thighs

It’s not just “bad luck” or “getting older.” Your body is telling you it needs more support. We look at how your liver, gut, and hormones are all connected, so we can help your body process estrogen efficiently and bring things back into balance.

Tired all the time? It’s rarely just one thing!! It can be a mix of stress, nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar swings, poor sleep, and sometimes hidden inflammation.

Here are 4 supplements often used in clients struggling with fatigue:

✅ Magnesium - calms the nervous system, supports energy production, eases muscle tension.
✅ B-complex - fuels mitochondria (your cellular energy factories) and helps your body manage stress.
✅ Adaptogens (like ashwagandha) - support resilience to stress so you don’t burn through your reserves.
✅ Omega-3s - reduce inflammation, keep cell membranes healthy, and even support mood.

These are not a one-size-fits-all. The right plan depends on your labs, history, and root causes.

We hear so much about lowering cholesterol that most people don't realize... your body needs it!!

Cholesterol is the raw material for making hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol. It also stabilizes your brain cells, supports memory, and plays a critical role in your immune system.

When cholesterol gets too low, it can actually lead to:

- Hormonal imbalances (irregular cycles, low libido, fatigue)
- Mood changes or memory issues
- Weakened stress response + slower healing (adrenal system)

Cholesterol is more than just a heart number. It's a clue to your overall metabolic and hormonal health. I often share a diagram with clients demonstrating how cholesterol supports the hormones.

Frequent blood sugar spikes can contribute to acne. Really? Refined carbs like white bread, sweetened coffee, or even "healthy" cereals can increase hormones that trigger excess oil and clogged pores.

It's true! Your skin is deeply connected to your metabolism. High blood sugar doesn't just affect your energy or waistline; it can actually drive acne by setting off a hormonal domino effect.

So if you've been struggling with stubborn breakouts despite a solid skincare routine, it might be time to look inside i.e. at your plate and your blood sugar!

A continuous glucose sensor is a great tool I like to use to demonstrate blood sugar responses to foods, stress, and exercise to drive healthy habits. And our friends at Abbott have a great program to help with this!

Most modern diets are loaded with omega-6 fatty acids from seed oils (like soybean, corn, sunflower) and processed snacks. Meanwhile, we're often falling short on omega-3s from wild fish, flax, chia, and walnuts.

As a society in general, Omega-6s drastically outweigh Omega-3s, creating unwanted inflammation. Over time, that can fuel everything from joint pain and skin flares to cardiovascular issues. The goal isn't to cut out omega-6s entirely (your body needs them too!), but to restore balance.

🔹Add more omega-3-rich foods like salmon, walnuts, flax, chia, and sardines (if you like these).
🔹Reduce excess seed oils + processed foods (vegetable, sunflower, cottonseed, canola, soybean)

Small shifts = big long-term impact on how your body manages inflammation!

One supplement on the top of my list: Omega 3 (must be good quality).

Even mild dehydration can make your blood thicker, forcing your heart to work harder to pump oxygen and nutrients where they’re needed. In fact, just a 1-2% drop in hydration is enough to slow detoxification, zap your energy, and reduce how efficiently your body clears out waste.

It’s a small shift with big ripple effects: less cellular hydration means slower metabolism, more sluggish lymph flow, and even brain fog.

So if you’re feeling drained, puffy, or struggling to recover from workouts, don’t underestimate the power of proper hydration. Sometimes the simplest fixes are the most overlooked.

Goal: 1/2 your body weight in water with some added electrolytes or simply a pinch of mineral salt will be helpful

Low iron (or low ferritin) is one of the most common things linked to fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, and even restless legs. It is especially common in younger female athletes.
Popping more iron doesn’t always fix the problem, and can sometimes make things worse.

Here’s why:

👉 Stomach acid matters. You need enough acid to convert iron into a form your body can actually absorb. If you have reflux, bloating, or take acid blockers, your iron absorption may be tanked.
👉 Gut infections can block absorption. Infection such as H. pylori, parasites, or even bacterial overgrowth can steal nutrients or create inflammation in the gut lining so you don’t absorb iron properly.
👉 Chronic inflammation changes iron metabolism. Your body “hides” iron away during inflammation, making less available for normal energy + oxygen delivery.
