Hi everyone!

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, and I can't help but reflect on the incredible work we do as speech-language pathologists and audiologists! Each day brings new challenges and triumphs as we help people discover their voices. What we do is not easy, but it comes with so many rewarding experiences. There is nothing better than helping someone learn to use their first words, or advocate for themselves when they are hurt or upset.

Communication is a fundamental human right and is valid in all of its shapes and forms. I'm proud of what I do, and I'm proud of all of my fellow SLPs that I've had the pleasure of meeting and collaborating with. Together, we empower communication and foster understanding. Here's to us and the amazing work we do!

Brain Positive Therapy is growing!

We are looking for speech therapists interested in 1099 contracting opportunities. The position would be 100% remote! There are no caseload expectations, and you would be given full independence to work as you please. No micromanagement, all freedom!

Have you ever heard of proprioception? 🧐

Proprioception is the body's ability to sense its position, movement, and force in space. It helps with balance, coordination, and controlled movements. It also impacts self-regulation! 😮‍💨

If you are neurodivergent, then you may have challenges with proprioception. This is the sense that supports whether or not you are a "sensory seeking" or "sensory avoidant" person. I struggle with self-regulation from time to time, and find that I need a lot of deep pressure to keep me calm be cause I am "sensory seeking" in that way.

Have you ever heard of ? Do you listen to ASMR, and are also neurodivergent? Well, there may be some science behind that relationship! Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a widely known phenomenon that has been popular for decades on social media. Since it has become so popular, increasing amounts of research on the subject are published every year!

One recent study from Poerio et al. (2023), cited that those who experience ASMR are likely to have differences in sensory processing abilities. According to the research, only 20% of the population has experienced ASMR, likely due to interoception and exteroception differences (Poerio et al., 2023).

Neurodiverse individuals often have decreased interoception, which is the awareness of the internal state of the body. In Poerio et al.'s research, they state that ASMR responders showed lower interoceptive accuracy but a greater tendency towards sensation seeking (2023). Sound familiar?

Amazing news in the world of Autism today! The House of Representatives in the US passed a bill called the Autism CARES act of 2024.

This act is one of the most comprehensive to ever be passed and covers topics related to aging, communication needs, and the shortage of developmental pediatricians (Autism Society of America, 2024). This will all lead to more advocacy in the world of ASD and providing more support to those in need.
