Recently in the Arts Access studio, Cheryl was working on a new canvas. She started by swirling red and blue paint on different parts of the canvas. Cheryl discussed layering one color on top of the other with the facilitator, who explained how it would look different depending on if she did it right away, while the paint was still wet, or how it would look if she waited until the paint was dry. Cheryl decided to wait until the paint dried to layer the colors.
We can’t wait to see how this piece turns out! Great work, as always, Cheryl.

We’d like to wrap up Volunteer Appreciation Week with acknowledging the incredibly vital volunteers we have at Miles for Matheny every year!
Our signature annual event has so many moving parts there is no way we could pull it all off without the incredible help we receive from our many event volunteers. From helping attendees sign in at registration and guiding runners along the trail path, to helping serve food at the BBQ table and operating the face painting table, our Miles for Matheny volunteers are integral parts of the entire day.
To those volunteers who have helped just once, and those who have helped year after year, thank you all!

It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week! ❤️
All this week, we are highlighting some of the outstanding volunteers here at Matheny. Our volunteers contribute in so many different ways, and there is no way we can thank them enough!
Today we want to express our gratitude all of our corporate partners who give their time and service to Matheny.
One such corporate partner is Daiichi Sankyo, who has gone the extra mile for our residents in so many ways. From planting flowers and beautify our group homes to building picnic tables and benches for our Peapack campus and group homes, their employees have made such a positive impact in our resident’s daily lives.
Thank you DSI for your continued support and volunteerism at Matheny!

Matheny’s mission is to provide exceptional care and an optimal quality of life for children and adults with special needs and medically complex developmental disabilities.
Overview
Matheny is a special hospital for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities . . . a special education school providing academics, combined with functional life skills, for students, ages 3-21 . . . and a comprehensive outpatient center meeting the health care needs of people with all types of disabilities in the community. Matheny also trains healthcare professionals, therapists and educators in how to work effectively with persons who have developmental disabilities.
Matheny’s main campus in Peapack, NJ, is home to 101 children and adults with developmental disabilities. Its five group homes, located in Somerset and Warren counties, provide a residence in the community for an additional 30 adults. Many of the children and adults currently at Matheny, in addition to their primary diagnoses, have a long list of associated clinical conditions such as vision and hearing deficits, seizure disorders, mental retardation and dysphagia, with resulting aspiration problems.
While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom — severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
