Kahua is happy to introduce another great clinician at our practice! Andrea Plasko is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in both Hawai'i and New York. With over 10 years of experience working in the field, Andrea brings many strengths to the team. She is fluent in English and Spanish, and is also learning French. Her willingness to provide a nurturing and compassionate environment for her clients is one of many reasons we are excited to have Andrea a part of Kahua!

Today is the anniversary of the day Queen Lili’uokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai’i, was illegally overthrown. As we remember the unsettling events that took place 129 years ago, we also honor Queen Lili’uokalani and her persistent efforts for Hawaiian sovereignty. Today, Hawaiians continue to work steadfast in fighting against the colonization of our islands.

Happy birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!

We love this quote from Dr. King that we believe applies to life and the process of healing. Things might not always be easy or feel like they’re flowing, but keep moving forward, and honor your journey.

Welcome Shantel to Kahua’s growing team! We place a high value in nurturing our keiki and believe starting therapy young can be so beneficial. One of Shantel’s great contributions to the team is her ability to incorporate play therapy into her sessions and create a space even your little ones would feel comfortable in. She is a licensed mental health counselor and a licensed marriage and family therapist with many years working for the DOE in Hawai’i. We’re delighted to have Shantel work with children and adults alike to build their foundation for a healthy mind.

Through imaginative play, clinicians are able to work with children in an environment that feels safe and comfortable. Children learn healthy ways to express themselves, work on problem-solving, and can gain insight into handling inner conflicts. If your child is displaying any concerning behaviors, or if they’re asking for help themselves, attending therapy where they can use their imagination is a great first step!

We can’t wait to share with you all the changes Kahua has made since last summer, and to resume content casting more awareness on mental health and perpetuating Hawaiian culture within the mental health world! I like to believe that most providers come into the field of therapy hoping to create a space where they can help as many people as possible.

As a therapist, helping to provide relief while someone is going through tough times is the primary goal, and is very rewarding work.

As a Native Hawaiian owned business, my goal is to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture, as I continue to learn and deepen my respect for it as well. For me, kōkua in this aspect means to advocate for indigenous matters and speak up in situations of appropriation and harm to the culture.

Speaking out on things that are problematic, socially or culturally, can be healing in a similar way that speaking about your emotions and feelings can be in the therapy room. Despite difficulties and push back, pushing through is all a part of the process.

Just a reminder that

You matter.
You are important.
You are not alone.

It takes a great deal of strength to take care of your mental health, and it is so worth it.

Happy Asian American Pacific Islander heritage month! The term AAPI includes an exceptionally diverse group of cultures, traditions, and history. During this month of May, in the midst of an increasing number of anti-Asian hate crimes, it was important for us to remember and learn about those who have enriched our community with immeasurable impact, knowledge, and respect. It is without a doubt that the AAPI community and our history is at the heart of American history. And in every sense of the word, AAPI contributions have made America a better country. As we celebrate and honor AAPI cultures, we urge you to also advocate for their equity and safety.

In therapy, the process you go through helps prompt growth as an individual as well as a family member, a friend, and a contributor to society. When finding the right therapist, it’s important to work with someone who you feel understands your goals and helps you create the best plan to achieve them. Kahua Counseling was always intended to be a place to help as many people as possible find their way to a healthy journey of growth. In order to reach out to more people, Kahua Counseling took the last month to grow as an agency. We look forward to sharing some of the newest changes and additions to the team with all of you!

I think it’s important to try to understand the meaning of Black history from Black people, whose lived experiences and perspectives should be amplified if we are all to recognize and appreciate the vast contributions Black people make in our world. I was honored enough to get a few answers to what Black history personally means from people in my life whose views bring me more awareness.

February is also Black History Month! There is so much of Black history that has been overshadowed and it will be up to us to do the work, to research, learn, and unlearn because Black history is American history.

As a Native-Hawaiian clinician, I am honored to get the opportunity to hold such a sacred space for many people seeking mental health services. Something I have learned in recent years is that many people are working towards connecting to their ancestors and exploring a deeper relation to their roots. A common barrier that has prevented many individuals from wanting to reconnect has been feeling like it’s “too late.” There has been a lingering cloud of shame because they think they should have been in touch with their culture from the start. And what I say to all of that is, keep going, persevere, it is definitely not too late. Our language and our culture thrives when we push ourselves to continue, even when it’s hard.

As the words of state, “E Ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.” The Hawaiian Language Shall Live.
