What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a long-term health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. When you eat, your body breaks down most food into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use insulin as well as it should. Over time, too much sugar in your blood can cause serious health problems—but with the right care, diabetes can be managed.
