🚩 RED FLAG ALERT 🚩
If your provider ever feels comfortable enough to perform a membrane sweep without prior consent, find yourself another provider ASAP.
What is membrane sweeping?
Membrane sweeping is a mechanical method of labor induction. It involves the OB or midwife inserting one or two gloved fingers into the va**na and through the cervix, and then using a continuous, circular, sweeping motion to gently separate the bag of water that surrounds the baby from the lower part of the uterus.
Here's a list of the pros and cons of membrane sweeping from Evidence Based Birth:
Pros:
1. Membrane sweeping can sometimes initiate labor without the need for medical induction methods.
2. Unlike other induction methods, membrane sweeping does not involve medication.
4. It can increase the likelihood of spontaneous onset of labor within 48 hours.
Cons:
1. Membrane sweeping can cause discomfort or pain, particularly if the cervix is not fully dilated or effaced.
2. Some individuals experience light bleeding or cramping after the procedure.
3. It is not guaranteed to start labor and may need to be repeated.
4. There is a risk of infection associated with any procedure involving the cervix.
