Parents/teachers: this was sent out from a self-contained autism program at a local ISD (slipped into a folder at meet the teacher night).

If a child is a minimal/limited/not 100% functional communicator requiring a self-contained class for their education, does this seem appropriate? Would you want this for your child?

I’m appalled.

We had an amazing first annual family fun at the Playspace in Webster. We appreciate all our Pearwood families who trust us to help their children with their speech and language needs - and are so happy we were able to coordinate some fun to celebrate! Thanks to all that helped make this possible and run so smooth!

Meet Devin (pictured, my husband) - he helps behind the scenes with assembly, maintenance, and my never ending tasks - and was integral in ensuring our first event ran smoothly!

There is a LOT of red tape for school based SLPs.

When I worked in the schools, I was told I couldn’t explicitly recommend an evaluation/ referral outside of the school. And it’s common for me to want to refer kids for outside speech, outside OT, neurologist, orthodontist, ENT, and more. Not being able to be clear in referrals often leaves parents feeling confused and also not understanding the importance of following up on referrals.

What I did: I SAID to parents (I noticed XYZ, and if this were my child, I would take them to a (provider)”. I WROTE in report recs (Parents may want to talk to their pediatrician about XYZ to see if a referral to (provider) would be beneficial).
