ABCs of ABA: O is for Overcorrection 🧩

Overcorrection is a teaching strategy where a child practices the correct behavior several times after a mistake. It’s not a punishment — it’s about learning responsibility and reinforcing the right actions.

Example: If a child accidentally spills water, they may be guided to clean it up and practice placing the cup properly. This teaches care, responsibility, and attention to detail.

Both Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Naturalistic Teaching are effective ABA methods — but they serve different purposes.

ABCs of ABA: N is for Natural Environment Teaching 🌱

NET means teaching skills during naturally occurring activities rather than structured sessions. For example, if a child asks for a snack, that’s an opportunity to practice requesting, labeling, and following directions — all in the moment! NET helps children apply skills in real-world settings, making learning meaningful and lasting.

A mand is a type of communication where a child requests what they want or need — like asking for a toy, snack, or help. Teaching mands is one of the most powerful ways to give children control over their environment and strengthen meaningful communication.

ABCs of ABA: L is for Latency ⏱️

Latency is the time between when an instruction is given and when the behavior begins. For example, if a therapist says, “Clap your hands,” and the child claps after 3 seconds, that’s a latency of 3 seconds. Measuring latency helps us understand how quickly a child responds, so we can tailor supports and encourage faster, more independent responses over time.

Key Reinforcers are a simple yet powerful part of helping children succeed in ABA therapy.
