The National Institutes of Health cancelled study sections that determine how over $30B of U.S. tax dollars are spent annually on scientific research. The Department of Health and Human Services has been censored from any external public health communications. The Department of Justice has been ordered to stop all civil rights work.

The health of individuals is tied to the health of our communities and the health of our democracy.

As the rich, powerful, and dangerously misguided are dismantling all of the above, what are you doing to protect yourselves and to create a different future?

Omg reminds me of all the weather events in Houston or the months of electricity rationing in Ecuador and the disproportionate vulnerability of families who have loved ones with in these places. Unexpected and dramatic changes to routine can cause a stepwise decline in cognitive health. We have seen it in our family after flooding and displacement. These episodes are traumatic, folks. This is why it matters to connect the dots and to understand that all policy is health policy.

Stop gawking at the unraveling of democracy around the world. It has landed on our doorstop. These things are not unrelated. Connect the dots.

Thank you, Rolling Out! It is so important to get the word out about this not so silent epidemic and how we can support family who come to care for our loved ones with this disease.

Want to learn more about early detection of dementia in our communities? 🧠

This past month, local media covered our work supporting family caregivers of people living with dementia. Here we are again, hitting national airwaves with Rolling Out. Perfect timing for those of us realizing over the holidays that our elders may be forgetting more things and requiring more help.

In this interview and article, Dr. Dona Murphey, a Harvard-educated neurologist, support caregiver, and our dear founder, discusses the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia, along with risk factors and lifestyle changes that can promote brain health.

Deregulating publicly funded healthcare, campaigns of medical and scientific disinformation. The grotesque outgrowth of a pervasive and literally sickening profit first ethos. No thanks. People over profits. You’re welcome.

We should never place our faith uncritically in institutions. They reflect the people who built and have inherited their complicated legacies and are often difficult to interrogate.

No matter how hard we push in a democracy for representation, transparency, and accountability (and this does not suggest we should stop pushing), institutions will never meet all of our diverse and dynamic needs. For that, we need a connected and engaged civil society.

When those connections are primarily through channels not subject to democratic norms (ie social media), we are in trouble.

I am very concerned about what is coming in science, medicine, and public health. If you are also, please make sure we are connected by email by dropping yours in a DM. If you are a real person, I will respond in kind.

This week, we will cover from a neurologist caregiver's perspective why it is important to identify the kind of dementia and stage of dementia in caring for loved ones living with this disease, what medications help in which dementias and at what stage, and when we should start thinking about transitions in care.

I call our caregivers personally to welcome them to PrognosUs. They very much appreciate the outreach and yet find it so unusual. It's sad that this is not actually the norm. I am honest with everyone that the value of the call is not actually in connecting with me but in understanding that they are themselves experts and can multiply their impact by connecting with each other.

If you are a family caregiver of a loved one living with dementia or someone concerned about a loved one beginning to exhibit functionally limiting age related changes in memory, thinking, speech, personality, or behavior - message me to transform feelings of confusion, anxiety, abandonment, resentment into confidence that you are not alone and you are capable of offering the care you want to give.

A major assault on health equity …

Seniors choosing Medicare Advantage plans for the first time often don't realize they might get locked out of traditional Medicare for good. But changing this problem must be done state by state.
