When someone leaves the hospital, it often feels like the hardest part is over. The procedure is done. The illness has been treated. Discharge papers are signed. But in reality, the recovery requires just as much attention.
Post hospital syndrome is a term used to describe a temporary period of vulnerability after a patient is discharged from the hospital. Even though the original medical issue may be stabilized, the body and mind are often still under significant stress.
Sleep disruption, limited mobility, medication changes, stress, and unfamiliar hospital routines can leave patients feeling depleted. As a result, they may be at a higher risk for setbacks or even readmission in the weeks following discharge. Having the right support as you go through this phase can make recovery much easier.
