This is Molly and Carter Webb, of Ironton. They received services from the Early Intervention program, operated by the Lawrence County Developmental Disabilities. Early Intervention is part of a statewide system that provides coordinated services to children ages birth to 3 with disabilities or developmental delays, and their families. The local Early Intervention team includes Service Coordinators, Developmental Specialists and other service providers such as Occupational and Physical Therapists, Speech and Language professionals, and others to meet each child's unique needs.
At around 8 to 9 months old, Carter was not sitting up on her own or swallowing solid food. She was also showing signs of Autism, as she did not mimic words, make eye contact, or laugh.
After a visit with their Pediatrician, Carter and her mom, Molly, were referred to Early Intervention. Molly reports that upon receiving services, Carter “began to blossom”. She is now more accepting of new people in her life and continues to thrive. Carter is currently an active preschooler.
Early Intervention is linked to improved outcomes for children, leading to better cognitive, language, communication, and motor skills. Also, by addressing developmental issues early, children are less likely to need more intensive services later on.
