OBITUARY
John A. Zerafa, whose friends called him "JAZ," passed away on January 20, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and boundless love. His parents immigrated from Malta to New York City, where he was born on September 5, 1945. He lived a life marked by service, commitment, and the warmth he shared with all who knew him. A proud veteran, he served in the US Army Reserves from 1963 to 1971.
John was the respected owner of john's Auto in Mt Vernon, NY for more than 40 years. His devotion to excellence was a guiding principle, earning the trust and loyalty of all customers – many of whom he counted as friends. He also worked for three decades at the New York Daily News as a machinist, where his skills and work ethic were evident in every task he undertook, earning the admiration of colleagues and leaving an indelible mark on all he worked with.
John was a family man through and through. Married to his beautiful wife Rosanne (nee Mastrogiovanni) for over 50 years, their enduring love was a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and warmth.
A loving father, his greatest pride and joy were his three sons: John and his wife Roseanne of the Bronx, NY; Robert and his wife Lindsay of Westfield, NJ; Vincent and Alba of Mamaroneck, NY; and daughter in-law Jennifer of Harrison, NY. John knew no greater honor than when he became "Papa" to eight cherished grandchildren: Elizabeth and Johnny; Gabriella, Stephanie, and Vivienne; Presley, Beau and Declan. His impact as a father and grandfather will leave a lasting impression on the hearts of his family.
He is preceded in death by his father Grazio, mother Maria (nee Camilleri), beloved sister Carmela Cavaliere, father-in-law Vincent Mastrogiovanni, and many other close family and friends who welcomed him into eternal peace, including his dogs Blackie and Yoo-Hoo. John is survived by his dear sister Josephine Koerner and mother in-law Ines Mastrogiovanni.
In this time of grief, we remember John for his kindness, generosity, love and stories he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy inspire us all to live with the same passion, dedication, and love that defined his remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor John's memory are invited to make contributions to their local ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). John had a deep love for animals, and supporting this cause reflects his compassionate spirit.
