Hey guys, I’m Dr. Miranda and I want to personally invite you tonight to join me for our Anxiety + Depression Webinar.

This is a topic is near and dear to my heart- first because of my own success story overcoming anxiety through chiropractic, and because of the hundred other success stories in our office.

Anxiety was nearly the reason I never achieved my goal of becoming a chiropractor. I had been diagnosed with generalized anxiety when I was 16, but wrote it off as me just having a type A personality. But, 6 years later when I moved from Pella to Davenport, left my now husband, family, and friends behind it became more than I could cope with.

I began having multiple panic attacks daily, overanalyzing every social situation, and developed severe test anxiety that was causing me to nearly fail my classes.

I remember my final straw moment. I had studied for 3 hours for a ten point quiz the next day. I felt so ready, but the minute the quiz was sat in front of me it felt like I had never seen the material before. I did my best, and as we went over the answers I knew every single one, but I had only gotten three correct. That is when I went and talked with my professor, and got introduced to nervous system based chiropractic. Over time my anxiety diminished, and of course I overcame my test anxiety because here I am today.

Dr. Katelyn and I both have our own success stories with chiropractic and anxiety, and since then we have never stopped pursuing how to do that for others.

When it comes to your health, there is a cost in waiting. ⏳

It can be easy to kick the can down the road. We tell ourselves;
“I’ll start eating better on Monday.”
“I’ll add more wellness habits when life slows down.”
“I’ll go to the gym next month.”
“I’ll do something about my pain once it is constant.”
“I”ll go to sleep earlier tomorrow.”
“I’ll work to lower my stress load next season.”
However, often we are telling ourselves the same thing day after day, month after month.

We can always find a reason for why now just isn’t the perfect time to focus on our own health. However, the longer you take to make your health a priority the more effort, time, money, etc. it can take to achieve the goals you’ve always had.

There rarely is a perfect time for anything. Sometimes you’ve just got to go for it, decide that you’re done with excuses. 🫶🏻

The hard truth is, often you are one of the only things standing between you and the life you want.

The reality is we see way too many kids + adults alike whose confidence is undermined by anxiety.

Stuck with a constant little voice in their mind that tells them that they aren’t good enough and unsafe.

An inner critic that continues to feed that negative feedback loop to prime them for even more anxiety.

Lies that hold them back from enjoying things in life whether it be mildly or severely.

The reality is stress is the spark that ignites this fire. Stress over and over teaches the brain that it isn’t safe. A pattern of failure that the brain learns is something to be afraid of instead of learned from.

Our brains are so incredibly complex and intelligent, but they unfortunately will believe whatever you tell it. And stress tells it a story of fear and survival.

This is why we love chiropractic for confidence + anxiety! We remove those patterns of stress and help the brain realize that it is safe. Eventually that little voice quiets to a whisper and you have enough confidence to squash it all on your own!

Why do we talk so much about stress on the nervous system⁉️

Because stress, especially when chronic, changes your brain! 🧠

Chronic stress changes how our brain perceives the environment around us, as it activates and weakens different areas in the brain.
When we are stuck in stress our amygdala enlarges, our hippocampus shrinks, and our prefrontal cortex weakens.

🧠 The amygdala is responsible for our emotional responses, especially involving anxiety, fear, and even anger. Playing a key role in identifying threats in our environment, and our reactions to our environment.

🧠 The hippocampus is the memory hub of the brain. It is responsible for taking short-term memory to long term, regulating emotions.

🧠 The prefrontal cortex is where rational thought happens. Where we think through long term consequences, allowing us to control impulses and emotions, and manage more complex behaviors.

Chronic stress causes more symptoms in our body than just tight and tense muscles. It quite literally changes our life experiences, as it changes the way our brains function.

Interference on our system shows up in:
Anxiety
Difficulty sleeping
Trouble focusing
Behavioral struggles
Brain fog
Digestive issues
Learning challenges + memory
Low or volatile moods
Sensory struggles

Healing in the nervous system takes time. & it often doesn’t look how we would expect. Nervous system healing happens in stages, and is totally different from what we have come to expect from medical treatments.

The medical system works by suppressing symptoms and shutting things down. That is not the goal when it comes to healing the nervous system & getting to the root cause of the symptoms we are facing.

It takes time. & to simplify the steps we’ll break them down into 3 steps:

1. Disruption: this is often the bumpiest phase. The longer we have been subluxate and stuck in sympathetic dominance, the deeper the stress patterns set into the nervous system. The body is doing its best to adapt, but when stress is stuck on the system this is more challenging. As we move through care we see that these subluxation patterns tend to fight back a bit, and we can see certain signs and symptoms get worse before they improve. We call this the “neuro detox.” This is actually a sign that an impact is being made on the system, and the body is working to heal.

2. Rebuild & reorganize: This is when we start to see changes in scans, stress patterns, improved posture, neurological soft signs start to improve, improved focus at school, less severe subluxation patterns.

3. Integration: This is the ultimate goal of the care plan. This phase is where we are now experiencing a high quality of life again! Where we see the biggest changes in our health, ability to handle stressors, quality of life is higher. This phase set sthe stages wellness, however the work isn’t over.

Because life continues. Stress is still happening. Kids are still going through growth spurts, injuries, illnesses, social + emotional challenges, seasonal changes, and more.

Our goal is never to just get rid of symptoms, and to be good for right now. Our goal is true health + adaptability throughout all the seasons of life!

Emotional regulation is the ability to influence our emotions, when we show them, and how we express them. The ability to manage them so they do not feel overwhelming.

Emotional regulation happens when we feel safe in our own body. Which makes emotional regulation and nervous system regulation deeply connected. A dysregulated nervous system causes the brain’s alarm system to be overactive. When this occurs it is difficult to pause, think, and choose a calm response. We react without thinking, all we do is feel. 😫

As stress bogs down the system our nervous system starts to switch more onto the gas pedal side, activating this alarm system in our brain. When we are operating off of this side of our nervous system we react, and managing emotions can become next to impossible. This can cause our reactions & behaviors to not match the situation. 😤

To be better be able to manage these emotions we have to improve the balance in our body’s nervous system. Bringing us off of our gas pedal, and to a state of calm. Where we are able to take a beat, think through what is happening, and react appropriately.

This is where nervous system based chiropractic care is so vital! We use nervous system scans to locate exactly where stress is interfering on the system, and adjust to remove it. This allow for better communication between the brain & body, restores balance in the nervous system, and allow us to function in a more calm & controlled state. This allows us to navigate life, and handle stressors that arise with more ease + resilience. In return, we see less chronic stress, mood swings, and anxiety.

Your nervous system has two different sides, and ideally we want to be balancing right in the middle. Able to flip between them as needed. ⚖️

Gas pedal ⛽️ otherwise known as your sympathetic nervous system is our flight or flight response. This side you want activated in stressful situations. However, we don’t want to live here all the time. That is when we start to see struggles sleeping, anxiety, behavioral challenges, emotional regulation issues, and digestive struggles.

Brake pedal 😴 or our parasympathetic nervous system is where we rest, digest, and heal. We need this side to recover from life stressors, develop, and heal.

Just like driving your car, you can’t be on your gas and your brake pedal at the same time! As stress builds on the nervous system, we start to press on our gas pedal more and more. If we don’t work to remove the stress from our nervous system, then we will get stuck there.

This causes us to be stuck in constant fight or flight. When we are stuck in fight or flight it changes how we interact with the environment around us. We begin to see small inconveniences as a threat. We have a hard time settling down, feeling safe, and we start feeling physical symptoms in our body.

These symptoms are your body telling you that it needs extra support, that it cannot handle the stress load it is being asked to carry. This is where chiropractic care really shines. Specific nervous system based chiropractic care focuses on exactly where stress is bogging down the system, altering our nervous system function, and changing how our brain interprets the space around us.
