Today, on World Stroke Day, we highlight an incredible story of recovery and collaboration between Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Memorial Neuroscience Institute.

When a 35-year-old Keonandre was brought in with acute right-sided paralysis and aphasia, every second mattered. Thanks to the swift recognition, expert communication, and pre-alert coordination from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, our stroke team was fully mobilized before his arrival.

Under the care of Dr. Brijesh P Mehta, Chief, Adult & Pediatric NeuroInterventional Surgery and Medical Director, Comprehensive Stroke Program, imaging revealed a large vessel occlusion. The patient underwent an emergent thrombectomy, achieving full reperfusion within seven minutes of procedure start, and within one hour of hospital arrival, setting a new record at Memorial Hospital West.

Less than 24 hours later, he made a full neurological recovery. This case was so impactful it was broadcast live worldwide via Proximie as part of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology e-Fellowship program.

In recognition of their outstanding partnership and life-saving performance, Miami Dade Fire Rescue received the Golden Lobe Award for achieving the fastest door-to-needle and door-to-reperfusion times.

On World Stroke Day, we honor the power of teamwork, between pre-hospital providers and our neuroscience team, that gives stroke patients a second chance at life.

Tiny costumes. Big smiles. Even bigger fights. 🎃

From W***y Wonka’s sweetest treats to Care Bears and pirates, our Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital NICU babies at Memorial West and Memorial Hospital Miramar, and the Wasie NICU melted hearts in the sweetest way.

And just like W***y Wonka’s lucky guests, each one of these little pumpkins wins a golden ticket, to grow, heal and to thrive. Each costume is a small reminder of the joy, creativity, and hope that fill our NICUs every day. 🫶

Because it’s unfair when a baby’s life begins in the NICU, but here, we fight the unfair with Florida’s #1 neonatology program and a whole lot of love.

In celebration of Pharmacy Week, our MHS Pharmacy Department came together to serve the seniors of the City of Miramar through a special Pharmacy Education and Awareness Day.

Nearly 100 seniors joined us to learn about immunizations, diabetes, drug interactions, safe medication disposal, opioid safety, Narcan use, and blood pressure management. Each participant also received one-on-one medication consultations and a gift bag filled with helpful items like Narcan kits, prepaid drug take-back bags, and pill organizers.

This meaningful event was organized by the MHS Pharmacy Community Engagement Committee, led by co-chairs Deborah Lolo, PharmD, and Sonia Sorrentino, PharmD, and supported by a team of 20 pharmacists, technicians, and residents, along with 18 pharmacy students from Nova Southeastern University.

A big thank-you to our partners at the City of Miramar, Nova Southeastern University, and everyone who helped make this event a success. Together, we’re empowering our community through education and care.

In honor of Respiratory Care Week, Lishawn is sharing 3 things she’d never do as a Respiratory Therapist:

1️⃣ Smoke or v**e: Your lungs will thank you.
2️⃣ Mix household cleaners: Those fumes can be toxic.
3️⃣ Overlook pet allergies: Our furry friends are cute, but they can trigger serious reactions.

Let’s all take a deep breath and make choices that keep our lungs healthy!

Memorial Regional Hospital has become the first and only hospital in Broward County and only the second in South Florida to offer renal denervation, an innovative and minimally invasive procedure designed to help lower high blood pressure when traditional therapies are not effective.

Led by Dr. Juan Pastor-Cervantes and his dedicated team in collaboration with Interventional Radiology, Memorial successfully completed two renal denervation cases on the very first day, marking an exciting milestone for our Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute.

This procedure targets nerves surrounding the arteries of the kidneys to reduce nerve activity and help control hypertension, providing our cardiologists with another powerful tool to improve outcomes for patients who need it most.

Congratulations to Dr. Pastor-Cervantes, Mary Ann Crawford, and the entire MCVI and IR teams for their collaboration and commitment to advancing cardiovascular care in our community.

When Joanna was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30s, she longed for a community of women her age who truly understood.

Years later, she helped bring that vision to life with the first AYA Breast Cancer Retreat, hosted by Memorial Cancer Institute & Memorial Breast Cancer Center.

The retreat gathered women under 40 to connect, share, and heal together, with conversations on survivorship, intimacy, parenting, and mindfulness.

With welcome remarks by Dr. Natasha Rueth, Chief, Breast Cancer Services at Memorial Cancer Institute, speakers included:

- Kanwal Bawa, MD - Intimacy & Sexual Health
- Sameet Kumer, PHD - Coping with a cancer diagnosis
- Ashwin Mehta, MD - Integrative Medicine

Because no one should have to face breast cancer alone.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing Ty’s powerful story of resilience and hope. 💞

At just 35, Ty was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She faced chemotherapy, radiation, and every challenge with determination. Three years later, she was diagnosed with stage 1 cervical cancer – but she and her team at Memorial Cancer Institute never gave up.

Now cancer-free, Ty continues to live life boldly and joyfully, traveling, serving her community and spreading hope.

Let’s stand with those fighting, celebrate survivors and raise awareness that saves lives.

Collaboration builds safer communities.

Recently, Memorial Hospital Miramar partnered with the Miramar Police Department (Miramar Police Department) SWAT team for a joint training exercise designed to enhance preparedness and strengthen coordination between hospital security and law enforcement.

By providing access to our facility for real-world training, we are helping officers become familiar with the hospital layout and protocols. This ensures a faster, safer, and more effective response if an emergency ever arises.

Together, we are investing in safety, readiness, and the well-being of our community.

Meet Jenelle.

At just 21 years old, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, right around her birthday.

“What started as a small lump turned out to be something I never expected at my age,” she shared. “Everything happened so fast, scans, tests, chemo, radiation, it was a whirlwind.”

Now 22 and cancer-free, Jenelle completed her treatment this January and is using her story to inspire others. “If I can do it, anyone can,” she says. “Trust your body, check yourself, and never lose hope.”

Jenelle reminds us all that strength, courage, and early detection save lives. 💙 Read more about Jenelle by heading to the link: https://www.mhs.net/patient-stories/2025/10/jenelles-breast-cancer-story-of-strength-survival-and-power-of-early-detection
