The light at the end of the tunnel!

It’s almost over but we have to keep social distancing and wearing masks.
COVID is not gone yet and is still just as deadly.

The vaccine is safe and effective with a lot of amazing science behind it. Technology has made it possible for science and development to move faster than ever to develop this vaccine.

Stay vigilant and safe!

I stand with science.
I stand with medicine.
I stand with my fellow doctors, nurses, pharmacists & healthcare providers and with all essential workers.
I stand with the truth.

COVID-19 isn’t a hoax.
Wear your mask.

He’s served 6 presidents. He lead the NIAID and NIH for nearly 50 years. He’s won the medal of freedom, was the leading scientist that changed the tide of our largest pandemic (HIV) and for almost 20 years (1983-2002), was THE most published and cited scientist in the world. He wrote the most widely used internal medicine textbook I used during my training. He’s tells cold hard truth without a political spin.

Today begins "water safety awareness month."

Remember:

Layers of protection are the keys to keeping kids safe around water.

Door and window alarms in any opening leading to water.

No doggie doors

Water alarms are good but not good enough

At least a 4' fence with self closing, self latching gate around the pool!! THE YARD IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Nothing spoils the view of your yard by picturing your dead child floating in the pool.

High quality swimming lessons. Children are sponges. Should be swimming in days to weeks, not weeks to months.

Lessons are expensive. Funerals cost more.

Little kids NEED continuous training in water or refresher courses. They will lose their skills.

Swim lessons can start as early as 6 months old. AAP says by one!!

Pool maintenance workers need to be diligent about closing EVERY FENCE, EVERY TIME. Regardless of if it was open when you got there.

No floaties. Arms reach supervision in water.

Empty all buckets of water and put them away.

Don't let them drown.

July 1 traditionally marks the start of residency and fellowship for new doctors and doctors who have completed residency.

On this momentous day, I am so excited to welcome the new interns into one of the most noble professions. It is the continuation of a crazy ride but an incredibly awesome and humbling one.

For those who don’t know what an intern, resident or fellow is:

-A resident team means you have a team of committed physicians, all looking over you and your chart, all under the supervision of an attending physician.

-Even new interns have already had at least 5000 hours of hands-on clinical training before arriving on July 1.

-New interns have already passed 2 of the 3 “steps” required to be licensed in the US: 3 days of testing, nearly 600 multiple choice questions, and 12 standardized patient encounters including assessment of history taking, physical exam skills, communication skills, and ability to form a plan of action based on findings.

-Intern year is just the beginning of post medical school training. After those 4000 hours, your average pediatrician, family medicine physician and internist (all primary care physicians) will complete an additional 7000-8000 hours of training before taking their respective board exams (an additional 8-10 hours of testing). Your average general surgeon will complete an additional 16,000 hours.

1️⃣ Stand up to train

“The average American spends 21+ hours per day sitting or lying down. We don’t need any more practice sitting than we’re already getting. So forget about training using weight machines or any other apparatus that supports your body instead of allowing your body to support itself as it was designed to do. Movement in life and sport happen while we’re standing up. To achieve functional fitness we should stand up to train, too. Training while standing helps us to rehearse and perfect the movement patterns needed to achieve optimal physical performance.

Stand up to train.”

~ TRX Training 10 New Training Tips

2️⃣ Be Inspired. Avoid Negativity.

“We live in unique times. We live in one of the rarest times in human history, where you can choose almost all of the input that comes your way, whether it’s the movies that you watch, the books you read, the podcasts you listen to, you can choose to be inspired.”

~ Joe Rogan, Be the Hero of Your Own Story

3️⃣ Consistent Daily Habits are Key

One meal won’t make you unhealthy, just like one workout won’t make you healthy. Your consistent daily habits will determine your success.

4️⃣ Always Do your best

“Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.”

~ don Miguel Ruiz, The 4 Agreements

5️⃣ Take Action

The traffic lights of life will never all be on green. Don’t let any other moment pass you by. The perfect time is an imagination land. You will find the perfect time when the guys on the Discover Channel find Bigfoot. Take action today!

6️⃣ Avoid Comfort Zones

The Problem with Comfort zones. The whole thing about comfort zones are that if you live in one for too long that becomes your norm. It never allows you to gain experience, gain knowledge, or develop mental toughness. You have to get out of the complacency of routine. You have to change things up. You have to set goals/challenges that push yourself further than you think you can in order to improve.

~ David Goggins & Jesse Itzler, Living with a Seal

7️⃣ Learn Your Behavior Patterns & Triggers

Self awareness is critical to avoid nutritional traps and/or relapses to inactivity. Ask yourself what works best for you, what doesn’t work for you, and what are you doing?

8️⃣ Disipline over Motivation

Motivation is a fleeting feeling. Here one minute, gone the next. Discipline on the other hand, is a way of life; something we ingrain in ourselves.

9️⃣ Accountability is Powerful

If you have a hard time being accountable to yourself make sure you are accountable to someone else. Accountability is the acknowledgment of responsibility for your actions with the obligation to report, explain, and be responsible for the resulting consequences. Accountability is very powerful when used for the purpose of encouragement, not shaming.

🔟 Have Hobbies

A hobby is an activity that you freely participate in solely based on the fact that you enjoy it. Hobbies keep us engaged, occupied, and make us come alive. Hobbies are also an effective tool/strategy in preventing eating out of boredom.

Care for all ages from infants to elderly
Care for chronic conditions, such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease
Ear, nose and throat care
Emergency medical care
Minor surgical procedures
Mental and behavioral health care
Bone and joint care
Eye care
X-rays
