If you are a descendant of the Great Migration to the Midwest for at least 2 generations, your DNA was fed by the Black Farmers of Pembroke Twp, the largest black farming community north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Just 60 miles south and east of Chicago near Momence, the farming community made up over 20000 acres of farmland that was farmed by hundreds of Black Farming Families. Their mission: to keep the families up from the south nurtured during Jim Crow. During Jim Crow, there were few to no options for Black newcomers.

They could not shop in grocery stores. Pembroke producers fed Great Migration families from Cleveland, Ohio, to Maywood, Illinois. The Truck Farmers of Pembroke managed the entire supply chain, from the seed to distribution across 400-plus miles.

When the growing season in the north came to a close, Pembroke became a source for the distribution of goods from the south. The Community Cannery was essential for stocking pantries for families without refrigerators.

JOIN THE HEALTHY FOOD HUB TEAM

We’re building a small, reliable team for upcoming market days—and we’re paying $80 per person per day to start.

These are hands-on roles with the opportunity for ongoing work if things go well.

POSITIONS NEEDED

1) Setup & Breakdown Crew (2–3 people)
Help with unloading, setting up the booth, organizing supplies, and packing everything down at the end of the day.

2) Service Crew (2–4 people)
Assist with customer purchases, serving, product handling, and general support during market hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT
• Pay: $80 per person, per market day
• Schedule: Market days only (with potential for regular, ongoing work)
• Opportunity: Strong performance can lead to future roles as the Healthy Food Hub grows

We’re looking for dependable, positive people who can work as a team and represent our mission of bringing healthy food to the community.

If you’re interested in joining the team, reach out with your name, availability, and which role you’re interested in.

Let’s build something that lasts.
