Giles Breakfast Lions Club, as part of Lions District 24C, is proud to be in on the ground floor of this brilliant new hearing screening . Children are getting their hearing tested at birth but then not again until they go to school. By that time a surprising number of them have experienced hearing loss to some extent. The Listen Up! program we're pioneering in VA will allow us to do hearing screening for children as young as 2 years old. The equipemnt is quite expensive so we're going to need to raise some funds to help us out. If you're interested, please message me here for information. I'll be glad to talk with you about the program and how it will benefit so many children and their families. We hope to have the equipment in our hands, a team of screeners trained and able to start screening by the first of 2025.

A wonderful morning with 2nd graders at Eastern EMS. On Arbor day 12 years ago Giles Breakfast Lions started an ongoing, annual project of visiting the school's 2nd grade class. We visit their classroom where Lion Charlie does a short lesson on what Arbor Day is. Then we go outside where we plant flowering trees. We began with Yoshina Cherry trees. Today we planted 4 more Yoshina Cherry trees. The final photo is of our friend Sara who was in 2nd grade when this project began. She's now a senior in high school. She and Lion Charlie are standing under one of the Yoshina Cherry trees her class planted on our first year there.

Several years ago Giles Breakfast Lions decided to help feed our neighbors by creating a Community Garden. The garden is located behind Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg. The garden has grown to include a small greenhouse, park benches, a compost bin and in the near future a learning center. All the food harvested from the garden is given away to folks in the neighborhood as our loyal volunteers and visitors to the garden. Garden manager , Charlie Herbert, along with Lion Tom Clemons and a couple of volunteers have already put up trellises for guards and tomatoes. The greenhouse is full of starts for plants to go into the garden as weather permits. Here's Charlie and 2 of the volunteers who work in the garden.

We've all seen the St. Jude's ad with the little girl in her pick glasses, riding in the red wagon that's equipped with places to carry her IV poles and lots of other things. She's also wearing a t-shirt with several zippers at different spots on the shirt. Those are meant to make it easier for the nurses to get to the IV ports for her chemo. As part of Lions District 24C, Giles Breakfast Lions Club has helped to purchase 2 of those wagons (they're Lions instead of being red) plus zippered t-shirts for the patients at Carilion's Pediatric Cancer Center in Roanoke. We also help defray costs of birthday parties for their patients.

The first Friday of December each year Giles Breakfast Lions Club members have ourselves an outing. We visit with elderly, shut-in folks around the county. We leave a small fruit basket with each one. Sometimes they'll ask us for a Christmas carol and we oblige them with one. Santa joins each year and is a big hit with everyone we visit. It's a long day with lots of walking, but it's so fulfilling. Everyone has huge smiles on their faces when we regather and talk about our day. Lions motto is "We Serve" and this is one of the best ways we do just that in Giles County. We wish each of you a wonderful holiday time, however you believe in doing so. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy New Year to all.
