April 16 marked National Healthcare Decisions Day, a reminder of how important it is to have conversations about your healthcare wishes before a crisis happens.

Hospice is a choice.
Advance care planning isn’t just for later. It’s for right now.

Taking time to talk with your loved ones about your wishes, your values, and the care you want can bring peace of mind and clarity when it matters most. These conversations are one of the greatest gifts you can give your family.

At Healthkeeperz Hospice, we are honored to support patients and families with compassion, dignity, and guidance every step of the way.

What Is CAP? And How Can It Help Families Stay at Home?

The Community Alternatives Program (CAP) is a Medicaid program designed to help individuals receive the care they need at home and in their community, rather than in a nursing facility.

At Healthkeeperz, we believe home is where healing, comfort, and independence thrive. CAP services are designed to support both individuals and the caregivers who love them, providing practical help, peace of mind, and relief when it’s needed most.

Our goal is simple: Helping people flourish at the place they call home while maintaining health, dignity, and quality of life.

CAP services may include:
Case Management
In-Home Aide or Personal Care Assistance
Personal Emergency Response Systems (Telephone Alert)
Home & Vehicle Modifications
(wheelchair ramps, grab bars, widened doorways, and more)
Nutritional Services
Respite Services to give caregivers time to rest and recharge

These services can make a life-changing difference for families who want to stay together at home while receiving the support they need.

You don’t have to navigate this alone.
Our team will walk alongside you every step of the way.

Celebrating a Legacy of Care — 60 Years Strong

On Friday, March 20, 2026, Healthkeeperz proudly celebrated our 10th Annual Barnabas Award Banquet & 60th Anniversary Program at the beautiful and historic Carolina Hotel, Grand Ballroom in Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was a memorable evening filled with gratitude, reflection, and celebration as we honored the people whose compassion and dedication make our mission possible every day.

A special highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to our Founder, Mr. Howard Brooks, in recognition of his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to caring for others. What began as a pharmacist serving his community has grown into an organization that continues to support families across North Carolina…one patient, one family, and one community at a time.

We were also proud to recognize Kimberly Price-Critchley, Regional Director for the Western North Carolina CAP Division, as our 2025 Annual Barnabas Award Recipient. Her leadership, compassion, and dedication to serving others truly embody the heart of Healthkeeperz.

In addition, we celebrated team members whose years of service and daily commitment help strengthen our organization and the communities we serve. Their dedication reminds us that our success is built on people who show up with purpose, professionalism, and heart.

As we reflect on 60 years of service, we remain deeply grateful for our team members, patients, families, and community partners who have been part of this journey. Together, we will continue building a legacy of care, from our community, for our community — since 1966.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this special milestone. We are honored to serve and proud to carry this legacy forward.

March is National Social Workers Month.

At Healthkeeperz, our social workers walk alongside patients and families through serious illness, grief, and coordination of care. With compassion and expertise, they help families navigate life’s most difficult moments with dignity and support.

Social work is rooted in a powerful mission: to enhance human well-being, meet basic human needs, and empower those who are most vulnerable. The ability to uplift, defend, and transform the lives of others is needed now more than ever.

Our social workers ensure that patients and caregivers feel supported, informed, and never alone.

This year’s theme says it best:
Uplift. Defend. Transform.

Join us this month as we celebrate the incredible social workers who serve our communities every day. 💙

4th Quarter Barnabas Award Recipient – Tina Jones

We are proud to celebrate Tina Jones, our 4th Quarter Barnabas Award recipient.

Tina has dedicated nearly 20 years to Healthkeeperz and even more years serving our community through the Pembroke Drug Store. A registered nurse, she now serves as our Quality Improvement & Compliance Specialist, HME, continuing to make a lasting impact across our organization.

This honor marks the second time Tina has received the quarterly Barnabas Award, with her first recognition in 2022, a testament to her lasting impact and consistency.

Presented by our President & CEO, Tim Brooks, this recognition honors Tina’s unwavering commitment to people and purpose.

Tina is known for her compassion, wisdom, and steady encouragement. She takes time to truly listen, supports teammates at every stage of their journey, and is a trusted voice when clarity is needed most.

Her pursuit of excellence, humility, and deep belief in our mission make her a true reflection of what it means to be a Barnabas — someone who strengthens others through knowledge, kindness, and faithfulness.

💙 Congratulations, Tina! Thank you for the legacy you continue to build.

Most families don’t realize help exists until they are already in crisis.

In a new blog written by our Director of CAP Case Management, Tia L. Sanderson, MSW, we share how Healthkeeperz helps eligible adults remain safely at home through North Carolina’s Community Alternatives Program (CAP).

CAP Case Management isn’t just about coordinating services - it’s about walking alongside families, supporting caregivers, and preserving dignity and independence.

We were deeply moved to see the obituary of Dobbs Oxendine Jr., a patient we recently had the honor of serving through Healthkeeperz Hospice.

To be invited into someone’s life during their final chapter is a sacred privilege. We were especially touched to see a heartfelt acknowledgment of his hospice nurse, Destiny Lowry, whose compassion and presence clearly made a lasting impact.

We extend our heartfelt condolences, prayers, and gratitude to the Oxendine family. Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you. 💙

The Lumbee Tribe of N.C. sends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Lumbee Tribal Councilman Mr. Dobbs Oxendine Jr. He passed from this life on February 11, 2026.

Mr. Dobbs started his career as an educator, but will be remembered as a savvy Lumbee business leader. In the 1960’s, Mr. Dobbs carried on the legacy of his uncles with the Old Foundry Restaurant in Lumberton, which was a refuge for people of color away from the racism in the Jim Crow South.

Mr. Dobbs served on the first Lumbee Tribal Council, representing District 3. Mr. Dobbs Oxendine was an enrolled citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of N.C.
