If you struggle with chronic sinus pressure, congestion, or recurring infections… your gums might have something to say about it. 🌿🦷
A new 2025 population-based study looked at over 210,000 people to understand whether chronic periodontitis (CP) — long-term gum inflammation — is linked to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a persistent sinus condition.
Here’s what researchers discovered:
👉 People with chronic sinusitis had a higher history of gum disease
• 30.49% had prior gum disease vs. 22.14% in those without sinus issues
👉 Having chronic periodontitis was associated with a 55% higher chance of later developing chronic sinusitis
👉 This connection was seen in both men and women
👉 In men specifically, the association was even stronger
Why does this matter?
Inflammation in the mouth doesn’t always stay in the mouth. Chronic gum disease may contribute to inflammation in neighboring areas — including the sinuses — potentially worsening or triggering sinus problems over time.
✨ What this means for you:
If you deal with ongoing sinus issues, it’s worth making sure your gums are healthy too. Better gum health may support better sinus health — and help reduce chronic inflammation in the body.
