“WHO strongly recommends supporting women to have a chosen companion during labor and childbirth.”📣

The evidence is undisputed about the benefits of having that emotional, psychological, and practical support during labor and childbirth; benefits that include a shorter length of time in labor, decreased caesarean section rates, and more positive health indicators for babies in the first five minutes after birth.

Companions can:

👉🏿 bridge communication gaps between laboring patients and their healthcare team,
👉🏽 offer massage or hand-holding to help relieve pain, and
👉🏻 provide reassurance to help the person in labor feel in control.

And as an advocate, a labor companion can also witness and safeguard against mistreatment or neglect❗️

The World Health Organization (WHO) urges global actors to professional organizations and healthcare providers to community networks and women's groups to play a role in advocating for labor companions.

And couldn’t agree more.💪🏽

Did you know that birth doulas work in a variety of settings? Not just home births, contrary to popular belief!

Birth doulas adapt to each environment while providing the same continuous care, comfort, and reassurance throughout labor, whether that be at home, in birthing center, or a hospital.💪🏽

Their support isn’t tied to a location; it’s centered on the needs and desires of the family.

As part of our February series, ‘Birth Support, Explained,’ we went back to basics on what birth doula support is; thank you for following along with us.💜

What else would you like to know about birth doulas?💭

"Midwifery models of care are models of care in which the main care providers for women and newborns, starting from pre-pregnancy and continuing all the way through the postnatal period, are educated, licensed, regulated midwives who autonomously provide and coordinate respectful, high- quality care across their full scope of practice, using an approach that is aligned with the midwifery philosophy of care, which:

i. promotes a person-centred approach to care;
ii. values the woman–midwife relationship and partnership;
iii. optimizes physiological, biological, psychological, social and cultural processes; and iv. uses interventions only when indicated.
In midwifery models of care, midwives provide integrated care, addressing the needs of each individual woman and newborn, within functional and enabling health systems, equipped with necessary resources and streamlined consultation and referral processes. They collaborate within networks of care as part of interdisciplinary teams characterized by equality, trust and respect. This approach guarantees that every woman and newborn receives personalized care, tailored to their health needs.

Midwifery models of care are adaptable to all levels of care and contexts, including home-, community- and hospital-based settings; the public and private sectors and public–private partnerships; resource-constrained environments; and humanitarian and crisis settings. This ensures wide accessibility, equity and relevance across different cultural contexts for women, newborns, partners, families and communities."

We see more comments, queries and concerns about induction of labour than about any other single pregnancy and birth-related topic.

It's too hard to put everything that women and their families need to know in one post (which is why I have written two books about this!)

But here are some of the key facts.

Induction of labour is absolutely the right decision for some women, and absolutely not the right decision for others.

Some women are delighted that they had their labour induced, and some women regret this decision for decades.

Induction is often suggested for a risk factor rather than for any medical reason. This risk may not be greater than the risks of induction itself for you - only you can decide that.

It is for those reasons that we encourage anybody who might be affected by this to get lots of information about induction of labour or any other birth intervention before making a decision.

The mass media is not a good source of information about birth. Newspapers spin stories to make headlines and often fail to discuss the nuances and complexities of the issues.

Like many of my colleagues, my primary concern is that people who need to make such decisions can get good information from a credible source and make the decision that is right for them.

That’s why I’ve written two books about this. They have both helped tens of thousands of women and families make the decisions that are right for them.

I also have more than twenty articles and blog posts to help you understand the issues.

Welcoming baby Leo to our family here at Believe Doulas and at home. So honored to have been witness to this beautiful labor full of strength, power, and the trust in the human body to do exactly what it is meant to do. Love what I do especially when it’s family! 💜💜💜💜

Black birthing people are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts❗️

This disparity isn’t biological. It’s driven by racism, bias in healthcare, and unequal access to quality, respectful care.

Doulas help change this by providing:

👉🏿 evidence-based education and preparation
👉🏿 continuous emotional and physical support
👉🏿 advocacy and support with informed decision-making
👉🏿 support that is associated with lower rates of unnecessary interventions
👉🏿 culturally responsive, respectful care

and EVERY month is a time to name these realities and commit to solutions, like doulas, that support equity in birth and beyond.
