This past weekend, many of our music therapists were in attendance at Nazareth University's annual Music Therapy Conference! In particular, therapists Hannah Baker and Jamie McArdle gave a presentation where they shared their experiences and insight to students, interns, and professionals in "Tailored Tunes: Crafting Songs for Individual Student Needs in the Special Education Setting" 🎶

March is Music In Our Schools month! 🎶 This month highlights the importance of music education, which also lays the foundation for music therapists as musicians and members of communities.

School-based music therapists - including the majority of our team at Harmony Creative Therapy - often work closely with music educators to best support students' learning, growth, and development.

Imagine what a music therapy session might look like. What instruments do you imagine them using? Maybe a guitar? 🎸 Or a drum? 🥁

While those are definitely popular choices, music therapists use a WIDE VARIETY of instruments that originate from across the globe! 🌎 Each instrument is used for a very specific purpose. They may be used to help develop fine motor skills or often times, these instruments provide a calming effect – and not in the way you might expect.

Last week, three of our therapists gave a presentation discussing notable research and their experiences with music therapy in collaboration with Speech-Language Pathologists! Participants shared positive feedback and loved hearing about numerous ways to use music in other therapy spaces, the motivating nature of speech and music therapy co-treatment, and how to pursue it themselves. We are thankful to have had the opportunity to share our passion for what we do to members of our educational and healthcare communities!

After 25 years of service in our community, our founder Amy is retiring from Harmony Creative Therapy. What began as a leap of faith grew into a trusted agency that has supported schools, families, and individuals throughout the Rochester community through the power of music and creative arts therapy. Amy’s vision, leadership, and dedication have shaped not only our agency, but our profession and community as a whole. As she steps back from the agency, we are deeply grateful for all she has given and the strong foundation she leaves behind.

Amy has many plans in her retirement, including caring for her family members, traveling with her husband and on mission trips, being active in her art studio, and supporting ministries that are near and dear to her heart.

Please join us in wishing Amy well as she begins this next chapter! 🎉
