HGWRR wants to congratulate Syara Andrea on her internship with ROPES. She has been assisting our director with daily tasks and much of the lawncare. Syara is going to school full time and has a 4.0 GPA. We are so very proud to have her as part of our family.

HGWRR would like to congratulate Nicole Medley on completing her first college classes! Nicole is working practically full time while going to school full time. We are very proud of her and all of her hard work. She also finds time to cook many meals for her fellow housemates. We are so very proud of you Nicole.

Barbara Kingsolver won a Pulitzer Prize for her bestselling novel about Appalachia's drug crisis. She invested some of the proceeds into a home for women trying to beat substance use disorders.

Barbara Kingsolver came to visit the ladies of Higher Ground Women's Recovery Residence today. She and her husband Steven brought lunch for everyone and spent the afternoon visiting. Barbara also brought some beautiful flowers from her home. The ladies have been crafting and made Barbara a Hocus Pocus inspired wreath. It was a great day at HGWRR.

Earlier this year, findings from a report entitled "Discovering Workforce Strategies for the Recovery Community of Appalachia" were put out by the Appalachian Regional Commission. The report drew from recovery residences in 423 counties across the 13 Appalachian states, including Virginia.

Findings revealed that 80% of residents in a NARR affiliate accredited recovery residence or Oxford House were on average able to secure employment within 30-days of entering the residence.

NARR affiliate accredited recovery residences & Oxford Houses create public economic value and play a critical role within the recovery ecosystem that helps individuals return to society as tax-paying citizens that contribute to the community at large.

We are so proud of Nicole! She has been working so very hard and it’s paying off! She started work this past week after completing all of her community service hours. She also signed up for classes at MECC yesterday! Keep pushing Nicole! You got this!
