“Don't be afraid of your fears. They're not there to scare you. They're there to let you know that something is worth it.”

When we’re born our nervous systems are developing based on the relationships we experience.

If we have people around us who help us meet our needs, who calm us when stressed, who are predictable + trustworthy: our nervous system has pathways of safety. We learn to trust + rely on people around us.

If we experience parent figures who struggle with addiction, who lash out emotionally, who are completely detached emotionally, or who violate or shame us, our nervous system: our nervous system becomes dysregulated. We learn that adults aren’t safe + we need to defend ourselves.

This is actually a natural, healthy reaction to an unsafe environment.

As we age, this will result in things like: fear of commitment, being shut down in relationships, being highly defensive or emotionally reactive. In short: there’s a feeling that someone will always betray you, that you have to protect yourself, + you’ll unconsciously sabotage relationships. Why wouldn’t you if you’ve never learned they’re safe?

Learning to feel safe within our bodies is truly a journey. Learning how to take care of our nervous system while also being compassionate to ourselves in the process is key.

Understanding your partners childhood experience will allow you to understand a lot about why they behave the way they do. It will allow you to understand why you behavior the way you do, too

It's more about quiet self-centeredness than grandiosity.
