Research shows that the average woman smiles 62 times per day, and the average man smiles only 8. Women often smile to defuse tension – and it works. Come on guys, use that smile more often!

Did you know that the alignment of your teeth can affect your speech? If you or your child struggles with certain elements of pronunciation, it could be attributed to your teeth.

1. Lisp or Whistling
A primary cause of the development of a lisp or whistle is overbite—when upper teeth overlap the bottom teeth too much. Another cause could be gaps in teeth, which impede correct placement of the tongue and allow air to escape while talking, creating a whistling sound. Braces can correct overbite and close the gaps between teeth.
2. Word Slurring
To correctly form words and regulate talking speed, our tongues need freedom to move. If the structure of the jaw or placement of teeth restricts that movement, stuttering or slurred speech is more likely. In most cases, braces can align the teeth and allow room for the tongue.
3. Mispronunciation
Certain sounds are very difficult to pronounce when teeth aren’t where they’re supposed to be. Orthodontic treatment places teeth where they need to be for better pronunciation.

Orthodontic treatment isn’t a magical cure for all speech challenges. However, for people working to correct speech disorders, orthodontics can offer life-changing solutions. And the advantages of orthodontic treatment are not limited to speech therapy alone. The confidence that comes from having a straight, beautiful smile and the oral health benefits will last a lifetime.

During National Orthodontic Health Month, we want to remind you that the American Association of Orthodontists suggest that children be seen by an Orthodontist by the age of seven. Not every orthodontic problem can be corrected at age seven, but most problems can be identified. We will monitor any child’s jaw growth and tooth development every 6 months, until we determine if orthodontic treatment would be beneficial or not, and we do this complimentary!

Halloween can be a SCARY night for your braces! Please remember your wires before you start digging into candy. Take a few minutes to refresh your mind as to what you can and can’t eat when in orthodontic treatment. Here are a few treats that should “not scare” your braces, so enjoy: Plain M&Ms, Soft Cookies, Marshmallows, 3 Musketeers Bars, Peppermint Patties, Reese’s and anything else with a soft texture that is not hard or sticky. Avoid the treats that can play tricks on your braces like these: Caramel, Taffy, Popcorn, Hard Nuts (anything with nuts), Hard Pretzels, Skittle-Type Candies and anything else that is hard, sticky or chewy. When in doubt, ask for someone to help you sort your candy into good vs. evil! And whatever you do, PLEASE brush and floss after you devour those goodies!

If a bracket on your braces accidentally breaks off this weekend, don’t panic. We have a few tips to help you handle the situation. The first thing you will want to do is to check out the damage. Does the bracket still have contact with the wire? If it does, keep it in place and stabilize it by covering it with a piece of orthodontic wax. If it doesn’t, take the bracket out of your mouth and keep it in a safe place. Make sure to bring it with you to your next appointment. If the bracket slid out of place when it broke, move it back into position with a cotton swab. The broken bracket may cause a wire to protrude out of place. If this happens, it’s best to clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers. As you do this, make sure to clip the wire as close to the bracket as possible. You want to avoid having cuts inside your mouth. You can use your orthodontic wax to cover any wire to minimize discomfort. And finally, please call us on Monday to make an appointment. If you delay treatment, your smile transformation could also be delayed. So, don’t be hesitant to call our office and explain the situation to our team so we can get you in as soon as possible if necessary.
