Anxiety in pregnancy can be so easy to fall into when you have a new fragile little life depending on you. With so much information flying at you, so many doctor appointments, so much solicited and unsolicited advice, and so many day-to-day decisions it’s hard to relax. The anxiety may feel justified at first, but slowly over time can become completely exhausting and detrimental to your health. Untreated, anxiety in pregnancy is linked to postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression as well as some possible negative outcomes for baby. Pregnancy or even before conceiving can be such a great time to learn and practice coping skills for anxiety. It can also be a great time to engage in healing those old wounds that manifest as anxiety. Swipe for coping suggestions. And as always here are some resources, many of them free, because I want you to know you are not alone and there IS support!

Sleep deprivation takes a major toll on the brain and the body.

So it’s no wonder that moms often have a hard time coping when their babies don’t sleep.

In fact, in a recent study, 31% of moms who report poor infant sleep experience intense anger.*

That’s why I’m talking about sleep for today’s

Sleep deprivation often sets the stage for Mom Rage.

When moms can’t get sleep they are more likely to be irritable, more easily overstimulated, and have less capacity to manage their anger.

This also means that getting more, better quality sleep is a practical way to counter postpartum Mom Rage.

But what are moms supposed to do when their babies can’t sleep?

We can’t always control our baby’s sleep. But we can:

✅ Improve our sleep hygiene
✅ Develop coping mechanisms for Mom Rage
✅ Form a plan to prioritize our own sleep

A mom therapist can help you navigate the postpartum world, improving your sleep and managing your anger.

If you’re in Canada, our Wellness Center can connect you with a mom therapist in your area.

We provide teletherapy services to clients in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia! Book a FREE 15 minute online consultation at happyasamother.co/book.

If you’re international, connect with at to find an online mom therapist in your area!

New Support Group Starting October 3 💙

Join us on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 12PM (EST)/9AM (PST) and 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 7:30PM (EST)/4:30PM (PST) for our new Birth Trauma Support Group.

Led by trained peer facilitators, this group is for any birthing person who has experienced trauma (mental and/or physical) during childbirth. Did you feel unsupported during childbirth? Did you feel unheard or felt a loss of control? Have you been grieving your birth experience? You deserve support. Birth trauma is based on your perception of the experience, and no formal diagnosis is needed to join this group. Some common symptoms, but not all, that can occur after birth trauma are upsetting memories, avoiding talking about the event, and having negative thoughts/feelings about the event. You can be at any point post-delivery, from 1-week to many years. This group is specifically focused on birth trauma and connecting with others, so you can know that you are not alone, and you are not to blame. While your story has so much value, in this space we will not explore birth story details as they could be triggering to others. We encourage you to reach out to a licensed healthcare provider to process your birth story. In this group, we will discuss the effects of trauma, our emotions, and coping skills.

This group is not for:
◼️ Partners or non-birthing parents
◼️ Those who experienced a pregnancy or infant loss (please join one of our loss groups for support)

Postpartum PTSD is fairly common, and it kind of makes sense when you think about all the ways that the birth process can become a medical emergency for mother and/or the baby. The list of possible traumatic events is long: severe postpartum hemorrhage, unexpected hysterectomy, severe preeclampsia/eclampsia, perineal trauma (3rd or 4th degree tear), or cardiac disease, feelings of powerlessness, poor communication and/or lack of support and reassurance during the delivery, pr*****ed cord, unplanned or emergency c-section, and the baby going to NICU.

Just going through one of these scenarios doesn't necessarily mean a parent will develop PTSD, and a lot of that depends on other factors from the individual's history and the amount of support and control they have during the birthing process. If someone has a history of sexual assault for instance and they are working with a provider that is not trauma informed an otherwise "untraumatic" birth can result in PTSD.

If you feel that you or your birthing partner may have PTSD from birth trauma it is a serious condition that requires professional help. As always here a reminder about resources: https://www.emeraldcoastperinatalcollective.org/

I met a mom today in the park and we just started talking about our birth stories. She shared about the heartbreak she felt that both of her babies had to spend time in the NICU and specifically the pain she felt in having to ask to hold her newborn. That really hit me hard. September is NICU awareness month, let's hold space for these parents by listening and avoiding saying "well at least...." fill in the blank with anything, just don't.
