In 2021, our first grief support groups met after hours at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida .

Before we had a permanent home, we created space wherever we could.
Nights like this were simple. Kids playing, laughing, getting ready for group.

Five years later, Valerie’s House Northwest Florida has served hundreds of children, teens, and caregivers across our community.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight: Patricia 🌟

This month we are celebrating Patricia as she approaches her third anniversary as a volunteer with Valerie’s House Northwest Florida.

Patricia brings more than 30 years of experience as a social worker, supporting veterans and many others in our community. Her lifelong commitment to helping people also includes many years as a Girl Scout leader, guiding young people and helping them grow with confidence and compassion.

At Valerie’s House, Patricia volunteers every Thursday night, connecting with children across different age groups and offering steady support, kindness, and understanding to families walking through grief.

She is deeply loved by the children, families, and fellow volunteers who know her, and we are incredibly grateful for the heart, wisdom, and care she brings to Valerie’s House.

Thank you, Patricia, for helping ensure that no child grieves alone. 💙

Last night, several of our Valerie’s House Northwest Florida children and caregivers had the opportunity to attend Oklahoma! through the Voices for Change program hosted by the Pensacola Opera at the Saenger Theatre.

It was a lovely evening filled with music, storytelling, and time together. Families enjoyed a welcoming reception before the performance and the chance to experience live opera in a beautiful historic space.

For many of the children we serve, opportunities like this matter. Grief can narrow a child’s world for a while. Being invited into spaces of art, music, and community helps reopen it and creates moments of connection and joy.

We are grateful to Pensacola Opera for including Valerie’s House families and for creating opportunities through Voices for Change that make the arts accessible to young people in our community.

This week in group, our children explored poetry in many forms as a way to express their feelings.

Some used blackout poetry, finding words on a page that stood out to them and building a poem from what remained. Others used those words as a starting point and added their own.

Every child experiences and expresses grief differently, so we always scale activities to meet each child’s abilities and comfort level.

The poems that emerged were thoughtful, creative, and deeply personal.

At Valerie’s House Northwest Florida, children are reminded every week that they are not alone in their grief.

Yesterday, Valerie’s House Northwest Florida was honored to host the NACG National Alliance for Children's Grief National Webcast, Trauma-Responsive Grief Support for Youth & Families Impacted by Homicide Deaths.

Professionals from across the Florida Panhandle gathered at Valerie’s House to strengthen their understanding of how to support children and families after one of the most complex and traumatic forms of loss.

We are grateful to the counselors, educators, advocates, and community partners who traveled to learn together and expand the network of care for grieving children in our region. Strengthening the people who serve grieving families strengthens the entire community.

Thank you to NACG for advancing professional learning that helps ensure more children receive informed, compassionate grief support.

Valerie’s House Northwest Florida will host the NACG National Alliance for Children's Grief National Webcast tomorrow, centered on trauma-responsive grief care for youth and families impacted by homicide death.

Families grieving a homicide loss need informed and sensitive support. This webcast offers an opportunity to strengthen our understanding and enhance the compassionate care we provide to grieving children.

Participants may also receive 3.0 continuing education credits for an additional fee.
