As we gear up to start birth tub shopping for the Belly to Cradle, LLC freestanding birth center, we want to know what you loved about your labor/birth tub OR what you’d want in a tub if you were choosing a water birth! We want to make sure our tubs are PERFECT 👌🏼🤩🤗

Normally the cord of a placenta inserts near the center of, and almost always ON, the chorionic plate. But sometimes...biology strays from typical and results in one of these cord insertions known as furcate (first picture) or velamentous (second picture). I see 3 or 4 of these insertions per 100 placentas I process. Sometimes these are seen on ultrasound, and they rarely cause an issue. BUT most velamentous and furcate insertions are not seen until birth.

This sort of insertion can cause an issue with artificial rupture of membranes (having the doctor break your water) because the vessels providing blood flow to baby are largely unprotected and and are secured by the membranes instead of the center of the placenta. As a result, rupture of membranes could cause damage or even tear the vessel structures in these placentas.

Just another reason discussing risks and benefits is such an important part of your relationship with your healthcare provider!

See this little guy? It’s a fun and somewhat-rare find when processing placentas—a yolk sac! The yolk sac is the last remnant of the implanted egg and is most often absorbed during placental development. But every once in a while it hangs out throughout the pregnancy and can be seen very visibly on the chorionic plate, between the amniotic layers, the amnion and the chorion. It’s always a lovely surprise to be able to see this last little piece of the baby’s very first home nestled in their last home before entering the world.

It’s really never too late to book your encapsulation—until your provider sends your placenta off to pathology or to be disposed of! This morning Amber answered the call from a local provider whose patient had just given birth and decide she wanted to encapsulate right after she gave birth! And everything worked out to still allow for our 2 hour-post-birth pickup timeframe.

Interested in what encapsulation can do for you?

We’ve been using a barrier for prints for years which allows for these unique and colorful prints without exposing the placenta to the food-safe dyes used! While blood prints can initially be beautiful, they may fade or even disappear over time and some may avoid displaying this keepsake because of the concern for light exposure or general squeamishness about having something made of blood hung on the wall.

We love that our process avoids all of those concerns while creating a lasting and beautiful keepsake from your baby’s birth!!

This was the third birth journey that Amber took with this sweet family as well as their third time choosing to have their placenta encapsulated by her! Repeat families are so special and this was the perfect length of cord to make a special keepsake with 💚
