What’s the difference between sunscreen and sunblock?

☀️Sunscreen and sunblock can both provide necessary protection from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
☀️Sunscreen consists of chemicals that absorb UV rays before they reach your skin. Sunblock acts like a barrier, preventing UV rays from reaching you.
☀️Make sure to purchase a broad-spectrum sunscreen or sunblock that has SPF 30 or higher and is water resistant.
☀️Be generous when applying sunscreen, and reapply often for the greatest sun protection.

Here are some tips to stay healthy during the summer:

☀️Hydration
Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which can occur due to sweating in the heat. Hydration helps your body function properly, regulate your appetite, and boost your metabolism. Aim for eight to ten glasses of water per day.

☀️Sun protection
Wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF that protects against UVA and UVB rays, even if you're sweating or in water. You can also wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the sun.

☀️Diet
Eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits, vegetable juices, and salads. You can also try eating small, frequent meals.

☀️Exercise
Regular exercise can help you tone up your muscles and burn off extra weight.

☀️Sleep
Getting enough sleep can improve your mood, boost your immune system, and help you lose weight.

☀️Hygiene
Shower regularly, maintain oral hygiene, and practice safe food handling.

During the Summer it is hard to stay healthy, but just as important as the rest of the year.

Happy Monday!

A reminder about sunscreen, now that the weather is much hotter and the sun is shining bright!

Wearing sunscreen is one of the best — and easiest — ways to protect your skin’s appearance and health at any age. Used regularly, sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging.

Everybody needs some sun exposure to produce vitamin D (which helps calcium absorption for stronger and healthier bones). But unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause damage to the skin, eyes, and immune system.

☀️What is SPF?

Sun protection factor (SPF) represents a sunscreen’s ability to protect against a specific portion of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer. There are two other portions of UV light: UVC rays (which don’t pass the earth’s atmosphere) and UVA rays (which are also responsible for skin cancer as well as skin aging). A sunscreen that is broad spectrum will protect against both UVB and UVA rays.

☀️What sunscreen should I buy?

For day-to-day use, pick a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. If you spend time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 60 or greater. In reality, most people do not use as much sunscreen as they should, and this higher SPF helps compensate for the reduced application.

☀️How much sunscreen do I need?

To protect your face, neck, arms and legs, you’ll need about 1 ounce of sunscreen. Squeezed into your hand, 1 ounce of sunscreen is enough to completely cover your palm.

To protect your face and neck, you’ll need about a half teaspoon.

☀️Should sunscreen come before or after other products?

So long as the sunscreen is at least SPF 30, water-resistant and broad-spectrum, it doesn’t matter in what order you apply your skin care products. Some people find it’s easiest to work with bare skin — before makeup or moisturizer have been added. Find what works best for your routine.

So now is the time to stock up and throw out expired bottles from last year!

Today is Earth Day!

Did you know that negative environmental impact doesn't just affect us physically?

Environmental problems can take a toll on our mental health. High temperatures, more extreme weather events and climate-related economic loss can also have a negative impact on our mental well-being. There is also the anxiety about global warming outcomes themselves.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day!

Why Are Spring Allergies Worse This Year?

Winter and spring temperatures greatly influence springtime pollen release. Plants must have enough warmth in order to come out of dormancy, grow flowers, and release pollen. 2024’s unusually warm winter temperatures are causing plants to leaf earlier than usual and pollen release will soon follow, prolonging the allergy season. Additionally, increased rainfall can lead to more plant growth and higher pollen levels which is also happening this year.

Some tips…

🌳Watch Pollen Counts and Avoid the Outdoors: Just like checking the weather, keep track of the pollen forecast. In fact, your favorite weather app likely has information on pollen counts. On days with high pollen counts, avoid spending time outdoors. This can be hard when the weather is nice after a long winter but your body will thank you for it.

🌳Change Your Clothes and Shower Daily: This advice might be the default hygienic practice for many people but when pollen counts are at their highest, it is crucial to take a “decontamination shower” once you get home and to wash the clothes you wore. Ideally, you’ll shower and change into clean clothes as soon as you get home. Make sure to wash your hair too. If you don’t shower right away, avoid sitting on any furniture in your soiled clothing. Certain items which you don’t normally wash after a single wear, like jackets or thick sweatshirts, should be kept near the door and only worn as needed.

🌳Wear Sunglasses To Protect Your Eyes from Pollen: Wraparound sunglasses are best for this because they sit closer to the face than other styles. Some experts even suggest wearing sunglasses at night! For safety reasons, don’t do this when you drive or get night driving anti-glare glasses.

🌳Keep Your Windows Closed: It might be challenging to resist airing out the house on a sunny and breezy spring day but you’ll be filling your house with pollen, which will linger well after the windows are closed.

Compared with people who said they ate just two servings of fruits or vegetables each day, people who ate five servings per day had:

🥕a 13% lower risk of death from any cause
🥕a 12% lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke
🥕a 10% lower risk of death from cancer
🥕a 35% lower risk of death from respiratory disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

"Fruits and vegetables are major sources of several nutrients that are strongly linked to good health, particularly the health of the heart and blood vessels: potassium, magnesium, fiber, and polyphenols [antioxidant plant compounds]," explains Dr. Daniel Wang, lead author on the study and a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Good self-care can take on many forms. It could be ensuring we get enough sleep every night or stepping outside for a few minutes for some fresh air. It can also mean taking the time to do what we enjoy.

Sometimes, you might need more self-care in one specific area to restore balance or find relief from a stressor in your life. To care for your health and well-being, it's important to find a balance that allows you to address each of these areas.

Self-care is important because it helps re-establish balance and avoid burnout. It is often the mechanism of recalibrating and getting in touch with our ability to play, have fun, relax, and connect.

March is National Celery Month. It’s a month to celebrate this marshland vegetable. You’re up for a Celery-bration, aren’t you!? Of course, you are!

Native to the Mediterranean, Celery is one of the best foods you can eat. It is very, very low in calories, People say it takes more calories to eat celery than the calories it contains. It is high in fiber, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Celery adds a tasty crunch to salads and tuna fish. It’s great in soups, stuffing, and many other recipes. It is a great snack paired with a variety of dips, or peanut butter. And, what would a Bloody Mary be without a stalk of celery!?

❤️Cardiac Arrest vs. Heart Attack❤️

People often use these terms interchangeably, but they are not the same.

❤️What is Cardiac Arrest?
CARDIAC ARREST occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly.

Cardiac arrest is an “ELECTRICAL” problem.

Cardiac arrest is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs.

What Happens
Seconds later, a person becomes unresponsive, is not breathing or is only gasping. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment.

What to Do
Cardiac arrest can be reversible in some victims if it's treated within a few minutes.

First, call your local emergency number and start CPR right away.
Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible.
If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls your local emergency number and finds an AED.
Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death.
Cardiac arrest affects thousands of people annually with about three quarters of them occurring in the home.

❤️What is a Heart Attack?
A HEART ATTACK occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked.

A heart attack is a “CIRCULATION” problem.

A blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die.

What Happens?
Symptoms of a heart attack may be immediate and may include intense discomfort in the chest or other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath, cold sweats, and/or nausea/vomiting. More often, though, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days or weeks before a heart attack. Unlike with cardiac arrest, the heart usually does not stop beating during a heart attack. The longer the person goes without treatment, the greater the damage.

The heart attack symptoms in women can be different than men (shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain).

What to Do
Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, call your local emergency number. Every minute matters! It’s best to call your local emergency number to get to the emergency room right away. Emergency medical services (EMS) staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. Patients with chest pain who arrive by ambulance usually receive faster treatment at the hospital, too.

What is the Link?
Most heart attacks do not lead to cardiac arrest. But when cardiac arrest occurs, heart attack is a common cause. Other conditions may also disrupt the heart’s rhythm and lead to cardiac arrest.

❤️Fast action can save lives.

02/23/2024

Vitamin D is both a nutrient we eat and a hormone our bodies make. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that has long been known to help the body absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus; both are critical for building bone. Also, laboratory studies show that vitamin D can reduce cancer cell growth, help control infections and reduce inflammation. Many of the body’s organs and tissues have receptors for vitamin D, which suggest important roles beyond bone health, and scientists are actively investigating other possible functions.

The best way to get Vitamin D is to go outside in the sunshine for a few minutes everyday! And now that the weather is warming up…it’s the perfect time to do so!

President’s Day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was even simply called "Washington's Birthday," which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains.
