It was a privilege to join Opening Doors Northwest Florida and so many other partners from across the area at the 2026 I-Count Homeless Connect event at Brownsville Community Center.

The goal? Help out in any way we — as a collective community — can. From basic health screenings to clothes to identification and other documents.

The event was part of the annual Point-In-Time Count, which is a nationwide count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Data for the PIT count is submitted each year to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Bonnie Cowen is an APRN and brings more than 13 years of healthcare experience, serving as a Family Nurse Practitioner at our Jackson Street location.

Bonnie earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the The University of South Alabama in 2014, followed by her Master’s of Science in Nursing from Keiser University in 2023. Her journey through healthcare has been driven by a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves exceptional care, regardless of their circumstances.

We completely agree.

That commitment has taken her beyond Pensacola. Through volunteer mission work, she’s provided healthcare in Haiti and Mexico, experiences that deepened her understanding of how crucial accessible healthcare is to thriving communities.

When she’s not caring for patients, you’ll likely find Bonnie at the beach with her children and enjoying the Florida sun.

We're so proud of our Health Ambassadors at C.A. Weis Elementary School! This weekend they visited Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida and cooked hotdogs, made yogurt parfait with berries, and worked up a salad for current McDonald House guests. They also did some light cleaning, toured the facility and were able to spend time with guests to learn about why Ronald McDonald House is so important to our community.

There are so many moving parts when it comes to healthcare, and every single one has its own importance. That's especially true when it comes to our nursing corps, expertly exemplified by our own Samantha Abbott.

Samantha is a family and mental-health practitioner in our Milton and Jackson Street offices. She comes to us from rural Appalachia, where she saw firsthand the impact the opioid crisis on entire communities. That's what led her toward helping people with additions and mental-health challenges.

“I strive to meet each patient where they are, without judgment,” Samantha says, “and with an understanding that every person has their own story.”

Samantha earned her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Cincinnati in 2020 before completing her Post-Master's Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification from Regis College in 2024.

❄️ Waterfront Rescue Mission Opens Cold Weather Shelter Starting Sunday, Jan. 11

With temperatures below 40 degrees expected for Escambia County Sunday, Jan. 11, Waterfront Rescue Mission will open its doors to those seeking refuge from the cold beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Waterfront will remain open as a cold weather shelter overnight throughout the week when temperatures are below 40 degrees. Waterfront Rescue Mission is located at 348 West Herman Ave. in Pensacola.

The shelter will accommodate men and women without children. Waterfront will work with community partners to accommodate women with children seeking shelter. If no community partner is able to provide shelter, Waterfront will ensure that anyone seeking refuge from the cold will have a safe place to stay.
