Happy BIRTHday to another sweet baby girl! After three hospital births, this family came to us knowing exactly what they wanted later in their fourth pregnancy. Patience allowed this mama to see what her body was capable of naturally and within two hours of being admitted to the birth center, she was pushing on her hands and knees, with her instincts, without coaching or interference. Her smallest babe was born in a matter of minutes, and even with subsequent interventions to retrieve retained placenta, she and her husband and mother left the birth center thrilled with their overall experience! We are so thankful to be able to provide this safe middle ground for birth and postpartum experiences! 🐝🐝🐝

It’s been a long two weeks for last night’s family as they ebbed and flowed through gently encouraging baby’s arrival. As a former patient of our beloved Jenny Allen for their first three previous births, we had some big shoes to fill for them! At the end of the day, everyone patiently awaited baby’s arrival and allowed nature and mama’s body to work and work it did! After multiple unsuccessful attempts at getting things started, her body and baby worked together beautifully to bring him earth side (on Jenny’s old birth stool) early in the evening after everything progressed exactly as it should—a perfect example of how patience married with gentle monitoring and attentiveness can allow birth physiology to work safely. Happy Birthday Sweet Boy! 🐝🐝🐝

This first time family came to us later in pregnancy knowing exactly what they wanted and didn’t want for their birth after their hospital tour with their previous providers. And once this mama went into labor she remained steadfast. She was shocked to find she was 7cm when she thought for sure she’d be sent home to labor more! Six hours later she was holding her sweet girl after a mother-directed pushing phase and birth in the water—exactly the way she’d hoped and planned for! Welcome to the hive, sweet girl! 🐝🐝🐝

Three days in a row, three sweet babies added to the hive!! 🐝 🐝 🐝 This first little girl was so comfy and cozy, she needed a little extra nudge to come out into the world—and after waiting a full 42 weeks, her parents were SO READY to meet and snuggle their first little one!

This second sweet boy took his parents on a winding journey that started with the possibility of a hospital birth which was followed by a trial of labor in the birth center—but when labor stalled out and some other concerns developed, back to our friends at HCA Florida West Hospital we went for a beautiful and safe birth!

This morning, a third little guy showed up—almost on our doorstep! This mom returned to us after a joyful transfer in her first pregnancy for rest with an epidural. She was shocked to find out she was complete and ready to push and had JUST enough time for us to prepare the tub before she powerfully roared her baby out.

What a week it’s been over here—congratulations to these families!

In a very BloomWell style birth (full of surprises, twists and turns!), we welcomed another sweet boy yesterday! This mama, who had already had two out of hospital births and a natural hospital birth, felt confident in knowing what to expect based on her previous experiences. But as they do, this fourth little guy had a plan of his own, and started labor by breaking his water, which had never happened on its own for this mama! His position posed another challenge, which meant she had to work harder than she ever expected to bring him earthside. These fourth babies, man. They just do what they want! And we’re here for it. Congratulations to this family who navigated all the surprises with grace!

Amber, here.

It’s National Midwifery Week once again, and I’m not sure why it’s hard for me personally to “celebrate” it. Perhaps because midwifery is HARD. Yes, it’s so incredibly rewarding to know my calling is being fulfilled and that my profession makes a difference. How freaking amazing! But it’s HARD to straddle the worlds. And here at BloomWell, like so many (perhaps all) midwifery practices, we straddle many different worlds.

We straddle the world between worlds, where the veil between this world and the ether is so thin. The only place this veil is perhaps thinner is…in death.

We straddle the worlds between physiologic, low intervention, community birth, and the medical system. The world between intimate connection and administrative tasks, clinical duty and law.

We straddle the worlds between helping families have the experiences they want and the experiences they NEED.

We straddle the worlds between meeting the needs of our patients and their families and meeting the needs of our own.

We straddle the world between what is natural and what is not.

Some days it feels easy and productive and well-aligned. Other days it feels like I am being pulled in totally different directions and that I can only hold on and wait for the worlds to align again.

And this is the life we choose as midwives. After this life chooses us.

Here’s to all the midwives stretched between the worlds and yet grateful during this Midwifery Week. What a privilege it is to be the space-holder, the bridge between worlds. Although it may be difficult, it is a place we are specially called to hold, so sacred and spiritual. And one that most others will not enjoy the fulfillment of in their profession. May we accept our calling and continue on, and always remember that two things can be true at once.

There’s three main options for chosen places of birth: hospital, birth center, and home. And many different reasons why someone might prefer any of these options. We’ve had so many families choose us after homebirths and hospital births and they testify to the enjoyability of this option!

So. What makes a birth center different from the hospital OR home?

🐝 it’s a great middle ground. You’re still in charge of your care with the continuity of midwifery care and a small, intimate team—much like homebirth care. But the safety of structure, equipment, and access to a higher level of care is always close by and quickly accessible if needed! You can make the space your own while declining things that you might feel pressured to accept in other settings. AND no worries if your team has multiple laboring moms at once!

🐝 no need to provide laundry, supplies, or space! We do all the clean up, provide the “birth kit”, and if an emergency or something off-plan happens, it’s in a safe space away from YOUR safe space. You’ll be able to return to your home the way you left it, without any connection to birth-related triggers. Because, let’s face it—birth goes off-script sometimes, and having a peaceful, trigger-free space to return to after a tough birth can mean all the difference!

🐝 you have space from both your birth team AND any household responsibilities. We’re here, nearby, but not in your sacred space. And your kiddos (if needed), household tasks, and the distraction that being at home can sometimes present, are all distant, allowing you to settle into focusing on the task of bringing baby earthside. And no need to ever be worried or concerned about the needs of your birth team—we’ve got everything we need here too!

🐝 we have all the tools you need for both comfort and safety. No need to pack a hefty bag or be concerned you don’t have everything you need. We were all doulas here at BloomWell, and we know exactly what a laboring momma might need or want. Birth balls, peanut balls, diffusers, essential oils, nitrous oxide, combs, TENs units, fans, emesis bags, tea, coffee, IVs, the GOOD ice! Even if you never need or want it…it’s here!

Happiest Birthday to the sweetest little girl born into the water and her mamas arms yesterday morning!

This repeat family has always been such a joy to serve and know! When mama came in roaring, she had no idea she’d have her baby in her arms about an hour later! Surrounded by a group of strong women and her husband, we all welcomed this precious babe into a room filled with love, support and tenderness! This miss will join her sister in our hive of sweet feeties! Congratulations to this strong family 🐝💕

Last night we welcomed the most precious rainbow baby into the hive! This family came to us for their third pregnancy which ended in an early pregnancy loss. We were SO thrilled when they returned with a sticky baby in their fourth pregnancy! And each appointment was so much fun with their entire family—their older kiddos participating in each prenatal, helping measure their mama’s belly and finding their brother’s heartbeat! Big sister was there every step of the way during labor, helping and supporting her mother SO well! And after five short hours of laboring in the birth center—a much shorter experience than her past two births—we welcomed baby boy into the water. We just love this family and could not be happier for them!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET BOY!

This family was such an absolute joy to serve! Mama was so positive and consistently brought smiles to our faces at every appointment. She did the hard work and it paid off in the best and chunkiest little boy— just not the way she envisioned originally. The team at HCA Florida West helped bring this sweet babe into the world via an empowering cesarean experience when things shifted at the birth center and a higher level of care was needed. The family built the best birth team alongside Natalie Zepp capturing every tender and powerful moment and Heidi as their doula empowering, educating and supporting them every step of the way! We couldn’t be more humbled or proud of this family! Welcome to the Hive 🐝💕

Collaborating with our supporting hospital is always an honor and privilege! We love the validation and openness from their new Pediatrics team to better support our mamas and babies when transfer to a higher level of care is needed. We are so thankful to be included! More collaborative efforts are on the horizon… stay tuned 🐝💕
