Downtown Pensacola Downtown Pensacola—discovered in 1559 and recently voted “Florida’s Greatest Place”!
(3390)

Dating back 450 years as the first European settlement in the United States, Pensacola has a rich and colorful history, and the heart of the city of Pensacola is its downtown. A refreshing blend of historic resolve and cosmopolitan progress defines Downtown Pensacola, a 44-block district encompassing historic and archaeological sites, chic shops, eclectic art galleries and award-winning restaurants. It's a walkable district lined with colorful bicycle racks, and bustling with alternative transportation options—from pedicabs to Segways to trolleys to holiday-time horse-drawn carriages. Thousands come to the nationally-recognized Blue Wahoos waterfront stadium, just around the corner, during spring and summer, and thousands more head downtown each Saturday for Palafox Market, a farmers' market enjoying its tenth anniversary in 2017. During the holidays, downtown Pensacola glows with the lights of half a million white lights and the month-long Winterfest, recognized as one of Florida's Top Events. Our friends Lucky Dough Pizza opened last night at 104 E. Gregory (formerly Gaby’s). We’re so excited for this new addition to the downtown Pensacola food scene!

Lucky Dough Pizza specializes in crafting naturally leavened (sourdough), Napoletana-style pizzas baked in wood-fired brick ovens, made with fresh, all-natural ingredients. Pensacola fell in love with their pizzas at their Palafox Market popup and now they have a permanent new home—congrats! 🍕🔥😋

Honoring and Remembering 9/11 today. 🎗️🇺🇸

Today we pause to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, 2001. A lasting tribute stands at the south end of Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza on Palafox Street, a 10,000-pound ceramic archway created by artists Peter King and Xinia Marin. The 12 ft. high sculpture is entitled the “9-11 Homage to America” and was donated to the City of Pensacola to serve as a public memorial to the victims and a symbol of a more peaceful and united world.

The piece had originated as part of an exhibition, entitled "Architectural Passages," that the couple completed on September 10, 2001. After the attacks, the artists revised the concept of the sculpture to depict "the melding of global cultures [and] the creation of a tolerant and diverse society living peacefully together on one planet." A dedication ceremony was held in downtown Pensacola on September 11, 2004, the third anniversary of the attacks.

The Wild West, America’s Most Wanted, and Pensacola all converged right here at this intersection on this day in 1877. That’s when an outlaw named John Wesley Hardin, known for being one of the fastest gunslingers in the West, was captured on a train as he was returning home.

At the time, the wily Texas native was wanted for the murders of some 40 men, maybe more. Law enforcement got word that Hardin was hiding out near the Florida/Alabama border and when the Texas Rangers caught up with him, Hardin was on a train in Pensacola. When approached by the lawmen, Hardin reportedly drew his gun but it got caught in his suspenders. He was captured and sentenced to prison.

During his 14 years behind bars, Hardin studied law and after being released in 1892, he settled down in Gonzales, Texas, worked as an attorney and tried, unsuccessfully, to win political office. Eventually, Hardin relocated to the violent town of El Paso, where, since the demands for his legal services were limited, he spent more time arguing in saloons than in court. Hardin soon returned to his old ways, with him being involved in several killings. He was himself murdered by an off-duty policeman in a saloon in 1895. His killer was acquitted of any wrongdoing.

Wow, 58 years, congratulations Seville Quarter!

Seville Quarter celebrated its opening night on August 16, 1967. Bob Snow opened the original “Rosie O’Grady’s” in a former cigar factory, taking the dilapidated 19th century warehouse on East Government Street and transforming it into a beer-and-peanuts saloon offering up heaping portions of Dixieland jazz and good times.

An early write-up of the club described the scene:
"In Rosie's, you find old timey silent films with such stars as Charlie Chaplin and W. C. Fields. You'll find the twangy, happy sound of banjos.

"And sing-alongs. The words are flashed on a screen and when the banjos begin plucking away, it'll take a real music hater to keep from singing along with those nostalgic melodies! But most of all there's the great sound of Dixieland music. And what music!

"This music makes me go," says a college gal when the Dixie Racing & Marching Society Band opens up. "Something happens inside — and whammo!"

Since its opening, Seville Quarter has grown to include seven rooms — the original Rosie O’Grady’s, Phineas Phogg’s, Lili Marlene’s, Apple Annie’s, Fast Eddie’s, End o’ the Alley and Palace Café — each with its own theme and atmosphere. Another building, Heritage Hall, was added in May 2003. The complex is decorated in a largely Victorian style with furniture and other elements salvaged from historic buildings from Pensacola and across the world.

Wilmer Mitchell and his family have been operating Seville Quarter since 1988, and under their leadership Seville has continued to garner accolades and build community partnerships.
