A Journey of Honor
Tom, one of our esteemed residents and a proud Vietnam War Army Veteran, recently took part in an unforgettable Honor Flight—a day filled with honor, reflection, and heartfelt surprises.
His journey began at 4:15 a.m. when his son arrived to take him to the airport. Upon arrival in Washington, D.C., the veterans were greeted by a crowd of nearly 200 people, all there to say thank you.
The first tour stop was the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Center, where Tom stood in awe of the space shuttle Discovery—a powerful experience for someone who once served his country with distinction. The day was filled with stops at the various memorials on the Washington Mall.
At Arlington National Cemetery, Tom observed the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and then paused in solemn reflection among the rows of white headstones.
One of the most touching moments came mid-flight during a surprise “mail call,” when Tom was handed a bundle of over 70 handwritten letters filled with appreciation and thanks—bringing tears to his eyes.
And as the day came to a close, Tom was welcomed home by another large and joyful crowd—but one face stood out: his wife Paula, who was there to meet him after the war, was there waiting to embrace him. Her presence made a meaningful day even more special.
This Honor Flight was more than a trip, it was a celebration of Tom’s service, a day of remembrance, and a powerful reminder that our veterans are never forgotten.
