Knowing how to help your child who stutters can be difficult. Here are ways you can help support your child through their stuttering, whether it’s a short phase or a long-term issue.

Slow Your Speaking Rate:
Good speaking habits start with you! Slow your own speech down to a relaxed, calm pace. As children learn language, their brains are working fast to make sense of the language they hear, think of a response, and form the words and sentences to make that response. This process takes a lot of brain power! When we speak quickly, we increase the language load for their little brains. Instead, decrease that language load by slowing your speaking rate. Making only one statement or asking only one question at a time leaves room for your child to process what you’ve said and form a response more easily.

Pause During Conversation:
Allow longer moments of silence to exist between statements and questions. Pauses help your child process what they’ve heard, even if they don’t respond. However, you may be surprised by their responses when you give them enough time to listen, think, and add their own funny or amazing comments or questions.

Show, Don’t Tell:
Speaking slowly and pausing is a “show, don’t tell” activity. Research shows that telling your stuttering child to slow down and take a breath can be frustrating, not supportive. Provide a calm, relaxed, no-stress environment, and your child will likely feel the freedom to slow down without being told.

Knowing how to help your child who stutters can be difficult. Here are some ways you can help support your child through their stuttering, whether it’s a short phase or a long-term issue.

Listening Times:
Plan for several listening times throughout the week when you can set aside time for conversation and plenty of opportunities to model fluent speech for your child. Using games, activities, or picture books, you can have quality, unrushed time to listen and talk to your child. When a child feels they have your full attention and they aren’t pressured, language and speech will flow more smoothly.

Follow your Child’s Lead:
Allow your child to initiate and direct the topics of conversation during the planned listening time. Follow your young one’s lead by making comments that are related to what he is doing or saying. When he changes the subject, go with it! This makes language more meaningful and pertinent to your child’s interests.

Have you ever listened to your child repeat sounds or syllables multiple times and it seems like they know what they want to say, but they just can’t get it out? It might sound like, “Mommy, I wa-wa-wa-wa-want to go outside!” or “Are we going to the sssssssstore?”

Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by unintended disruptions that interfere with flow of speech. Stuttering can include repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words, holding out consonants (e.g., sssssssnake), or pauses and stops in speech that shouldn't be there.

Did you know approximately 5-10% of all children will stutter at some point in their life, ranging from weeks to years? Many children outgrow stuttering within 12-24 months.

About 5% of all children go through a period of stuttering that lasts six months or more.
Approximately 95% of children who stutter start before the age of 4 years, most often starting just before age 3.

If your child has been stuttering for longer than 6 months, it’s a good idea to see a speech language pathologist who can help you to know if there is a concern. Give us a call - we can help!
